1. DEFINE the general topic
Read the scripture lessons for worship.
What is the sermon title?
Is there an emphasis in worship for the day?
Is there a liturgical season to consider?
2. PRAY for insight
Ask for God's wisdom as you consider a conversation with the
children.
Listen to God and keep a pencil handy to write down what you
hear.
3. IMAGINE the question
Use you imagination.
Consider what you would do if you could do ANYTHING to experience
this topic.
Determine what is appropriate for children and for a worship
setting.
4. ASSESS the resources
What materials will be needed: people, objects, places in the
sanctuary?
5. KEEP details in mind
Length: 3-4 minutes is a good rule
Configuration: Where will you be? Where will the children be?
Special Needs: Are there any special needs for materials, space
or equipment?
Order of worship: What precedes and follows the conversation
in worship? Does it impact the time with the children?
Close in prayer: What will you pray? Is it simple? What role
do the children have in prayer?
6. PRACTICE the conversation
Take time to run through the conversation.
How does the configuration seem to work?
Is it long enough, too long or just right?
Is your vocabulary appropriate?
Do you know how to use the microphone and sound system?
7. ARRIVE early
On Sunday morning, plan to meet with the preacher and any other
worship leaders for prayer and last minute details before the
worship service begins.
8. WELCOME the children
When the children come forward, be in place to welcome them
and be among them.
Greet them with the "peace of Christ"
Learn a few names and call the children by name, when able.
Make eye contact and be affirming.
