Black History Month continues to be a time for all Americans to learn about and celebrate the lives and legacy of people of African descent in America. Unfortunately, a limited amount of African-American history is taught in the public school system and few families set aside time to read literature written by or about African Americans.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Congregational Ministries Publishing, and others provide a number of educational resources, such as Faith Journey: Special Edition, featuring special days that are particularly significant for African-Americans. A church that recognizes the importance of teaching its members to value and respect all cultures is a church that works toward the eradication of racism and prejudice.
Another resource that can be used during Black History Month or anytime during the year is The Changing Face of the African American Church: Ministry to Young Adults, a
video and study guide that helps congregations understand the importance of reaching young adults and gives practical suggestions for retaining their leadership in the church.
Jesus and the Hip-Hop Generation, a small-group study for young adults, is a Bible study that examines the unique culture of today’s generation from a biblical perspective.
In the Heart of Worship, a CD produced by the African Heritage Presbyterian association of Musicians (AHPAM), features hymns from The Presbyterian Hymnal embellished with jazz and blues musical styling. This CD/DVD set can be used during personal devotion time or as a centering resource before committee meetings. AHPAM musicians are available to present workshops, music clinics, concerts, or provide worship during retreats or special gatherings. African-American history can be taught in our congregations in a variety of creative ways.
Consider beginning your congregation’s celebration of the diversity of all God’s people with Race Relations Sunday, January 17, 2010. Find worship materials and other ideas.
