Food and water
Water and food are essential to all life. The food we eat and the water we drink help to shape not only our bodies but the world in which we all live.
The Bible is filled with stories, parables and miracles involving water and food. Our church’s sacraments are deeply connected to water and food. We meet Christ and encounter grace in the sacrament of the Eucharist through the symbols of broken bread and poured out cup. We covenant to be faithful and celebrate the mystery of grace in the sacrament of baptism as waters symbolize renewal and rebirth.
All people should have access to clean, safe water and food. If we are striving to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God, then we must ensure food sovereignty and water security for all. If we love our neighbors as ourselves, then we must do all that we can to be sure that all people have enough water and food for daily living. The materials on these pages cover the topics of water and food as they relate to daily living.
What we eat and drink impacts our bodies and our physical and mental well being. Therefore, we seek to assist people in finding an appropriate balance between too much and too little, while also upholding the call to justice by addressing policies and items for action that individuals and churches can engage to bring about God’s realm.

Water
Learn about water privatization, water sovereignty, the impact of bottled water, water pollution and other areas in which individuals may become involved to ensure all life has the necessary water to survive. Food and water are two essential components to life and we are called to be responsible stewards of both.
Sustaining Waters assists Christians to be good stewards of water. As such it is divided into three sections: Clean Waters, Abundant Waters and Recovery Waters. Clean Waters covers water stewardship and environmental concerns; by protecting and preserving water resources we presently have we can ensure clean, life-giving waters for future generations. Abundant Waters focuses on water privatization and briefly discusses the need to maintain public water supplies so that all may have access to safe, abundant water. Recovery Waters explores the water related disasters and the people affected by these disasters; where too much water once brought destruction, Christians and their partners around the world may work with God to bring healing waters of recovery. Food
Explore food sovereignty, food production and other topics that individuals can become involved in to ensure that each of us has access to and enough healthy food to survive and thrive.
Join with Presbyterians around the country in monthly 40-hour fasts to help discern ways to respond to the Global Food Crisis. The fasts typically take place on the first weekend of every month, beginning on Friday evening and ending with Communion or a communal meal on Sunday.
The Campaign for Fair Food is an ongoing effort of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), in partnership with farmworkers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), to establish purchasing practices within the retail food industry that ensure and advance fair wages and other human rights of tomato pickers who labor at the base of these corporate supply chains.
Read and discover the intersections between food and faith. Authors share their experiences about how the food they eat reflects their faith in Christ. Posts range from international advocacy to daily habits. While the blog is managed by Andrew Kang Bartlett, associate for national hunger concerns, different authors write from around the United States. Just Eating? Practicing Our Faith at the Table is designed for high schoolers and adults. The curriculum aims to bring into dialogue daily eating habits, the Christian faith and the "needs of the broader world."
