| Can our church or church members
provide shelter for those displaced by the hurricane?
We have received many inquiries on how one can offer their home and have received
many offers for the use of homes and apartments. What a wonderful outpouring
of hospitality!
It has been just over a month since Hurricane Katrina made landfall. The magnitude
of the destruction placed an extreme hardship on most systems designed to respond
to natural disaster — including Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.
As the American Red Cross and FEMA have begun to identify viable housing solutions
for the many who were displaced, it has also been noted that a large percentage
of the population was composed of people who were born in the communities and/or
had long-term ties with the communities. News reports indicate that even in the
most devastated areas of Louisiana, the residents owned the majority of the homes
destroyed. As the initial shock of the disaster begins to wane for the survivors,
we are aware that many of the evacuees will seek a way to return to their communities.
Based on this information, we have removed the registration form for individuals
offering housing.
If this is something you are still very interested in, we encourage you to
contact your local emergency organizations that may be active in responding,
or refugee resettlement affiliate office if there is one in your area.
Again, thank you for your wonderful outpouring of hospitality and your adherence
to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
