Location: Pearlington, Mississippi, situated between the Bay and Pearl River, with a short commute to Slidell, Louisiana, or Waveland, Mississippi. Opened January 2006. Pearlington is easily accessible to both New Orleans and Gulfport airports.
Number of beds: 74
Needs as of April 2008:
- Skills needed include general labor, skilled roofers, electricians, plumbers and carpenters. The town is in the rebuilding phase — nails are plentiful.
- Volunteers must provide their own transportation.
- Steel toed (preferably steel shank) shoes/boots are highly recommended. Long sleeves and pants may be an asset when insulating and to protect against sun and bugs.
- Tools are on site, but volunteers are welcome to bring newer and more specialized/trade specific items (please label).
Additional information: Pearlington is an unincorporated community which has been overlooked by government help and funds. Pearlington was dubbed "ground zero" because the eye of the storm passed right through it. Volunteers get to enjoy a hot lunch at the First Missionary Baptist Church during the week. In the evenings, residents who are working alongside the volunteers on their homes often join the volunteers for dinner and fellowship.
Ready to Go? Teams interested in serving through any of the Presbyterian Volunteer Villages may register online or may contact Penny Noel and the volunteers at the PDA Call Center, (866) 732-6121.
