Coordinating Committee for Korean American Presbyteries (CCKAP)

  Background

The 209th General Assembly (1997) approved the formation of the Coordinating Committee of Korean American Presbyteries for the purpose of coordinating, consulting, networking, sharing and communicating the ministries and mission of the Korean American presbyteries in the denomination. Funding through the Office of Korean Congregation Enhancement was approved and set aside to accomplish these goals. The Associate for Korean Congregational Support has been assigned to staff the Coordinating Committee.

As of May 1, 2005, there are four formally organized Korean American presbyteries. They are located within the bounds of the Synod of Southern California & Hawaii, the Synod of Lincoln Trails, the Synod of the Northeast, and the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic. Two additional Korean American presbyteries are currently in the process of organization in the Synod of the Pacific and the Synod of Alaska/Northwest.

The Coordinating Committee for Korean American Presbyteries has, in the period of its work, served to energize and focus the ministry of Korean American presbyteries. There are evidences of growth in several dimensions in Korean American presbyteries, together with an enthusiasm for the unique ministry to which they have been called with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Evidence of progress and commitments among the Korean constituency may well challenge the rest of our church to new vigor in mission.

  Mission Statement

Korean American presbyteries in the PC(USA) focus vigorously on evangelism through which the churches continue to strive for growth in number and quality. In conjunction with the 208th General Assembly (1996) resolution that racial ethnic and immigrant membership be increased 20 percent by the year 2010, Koran American presbyteries play a pivotal role in church growth through new church development and redevelopment projects.

Korean American presbyteries engage strongly in enabling, educating, and strengthening the development of leadership through innovative teaching, supported by research and professional service, with a focus on experiential learning, technology integration, ministry partnering, and service ministry. Korean American presbyteries provide resource material and educational training opportunities to educate, train, nurture and empower the coming generations so that young people will be able to effectively serve the church with vision, creativity and evangelistic enthusiasm for the spiritual renewal of both congregations and the denomination, and to fully participate in the enriched life of the denomination as mission partners.

The Korean American presbyteries continue to need the coordinating efforts of CCKAP for the mutual encouragement and learning of the process and management of the presbytery in relation to congregations and the higher governing bodies.

For the purposes of accomplishing these missions effectively, the Korean American presbyteries are committed to share, coordinate, consult, network and communicate to build clear vision and partnership with the church wide community through the conferences and networking of Coordinating Committee for Korean American Presbyteries.

  Strategies

Korean American presbyteries are envisioned to continue as the primary source for Korean American church growth. To implement this goal, CCKAP designed an intentional strategy to ensure its ability to capitalize on the opportunities God provides. CCKAP is directly involved with New Church Development and Redevelopment projects in each region and synod where a Korean Presbyterian is located. New Church Development and Redevelopment committee at each presbytery study, educate, plan, train, coordinate and prepare strategies for the NCD/RD projects, as well as develop funding proposals. This intentional planning efforts need to be initiated and implemented to accomplish its goals and objectives especially given the ambitious goals that have been set forth.

Furthermore, to assist in the New Church Development and Redevelopment projects, CCKAP implements new initiatives in leadership programs and resource development that strengthens existing Korean American congregations and leads to congregational vitality and growth.

Clearly, the face of America is changing. The nation is becoming increasingly multicultural. This is particularly true of the urban communities and it is an increasing visible reality in rural situation as well. Consequently each presbytery shall make long-term and realistic goals for church development capitalizing on the projection of demographic shift in its region for the next ten (10) to twenty (20) years. Major efforts should be placed in the new church development and redevelopment project in large cities like Los Angeles., Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston and Dallas where in many Korean immigrants have settled.

New immigrant communities are fertile ground for the Presbyterian Church to provide ministry, proclaim the gospel, and develop new congregations and Bible study fellowships. These fellowship groups often transition into new church developments as they gain strength.

CCKAP recognizes that Korean American presbyteries start new churches and other church expansion projects. These activities are emphasized as ways in which the CCKAP may develop and help support multicultural congregations and English ministry for second generation of Korean Americans.
