National Council of Korean Presbyterian Churches

The National Council of Korean Presbyterian Churches (NCKPC), PC(USA) is a racial ethnic caucus under the National Asian Presbyterian Council (NAPC), representing 400 Korean-American churches in the PC(USA). It is the second largest racial ethnic caucus in the denomination with about 50,000 active members and 32 years of history. See the official Web site of the NCKPC.

  History

Nineteen Korean-Americans of UPCUSA who were instrumental in organizing APC (Asian Presbyterian Caucus) in 1972 met in March of 1972 in White Sulfur Spring Camp, California to charter The Korean Presbyterian Caucus (KPC) representing Korean ethnic caucus in APC. Its first statement of the organization emphasized the need of special ministry for Korean people, establishment of local Korean churches and development of programs meeting their needs, bilingual staffs to assist Korean congregations, racial justice and partnership in the wider church ministry. As the organization grew in membership and ministries with the help of Consulting Committee of Korean-American Ministry, the name has been changed to The National Korean Presbyterian Conference. Bilingual hymnals were first published in the Easter of 1978 and over 35,000 copies were widely distributed to Korean congregations.

In the South eighteen Korean pastors met in April, 1979 in Atlanta to charter The Korean Presbyterian Council of the Presbyterian Church in the US. Its purpose was to coordinate and consult the common concerns of Korean churches with PCUS to develop programs for leadership training and Christian education, and to facilitate solidarity and cooperation among Korean churches for church development and evangelism. In 1980, PCUS appointed the Rev. C.W. Choi as the first staff for Korean-American ministry.

Christian education leaders training, Korean version of Book of Order, annual youth retreat, and lay leadership training (NKPW and NKPM) were the highlights of KPC of the PCUS until reunion of North and South KPC in 1984.

Following the union of UPCUSA and PCUS in 1983, North and South KPC met on May 25-27, 1984 at the Korean United Presbyterian Church (the first Korean Presbyterian church in the United States) in Los Angeles and a unified body was born with the official name of National Korean Presbyterian Council in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The membership consisted of 123 organized churches, 54 NCD churches and three Korean congregations in American churches. The NCKPC have continued to hold Annual Assembly and National Conference once a year to consult and discuss common goals and programs. Because of the limited participation in the National Assembly, the Synod Korean Presbyterian Council (SKPC) was organized in each synod since 1988 and each SKPC developed and implemented its own programs of synod annual retreat, clergy continuing education, youth and young adult retreats, Christian educator training and lay leadership training.

New Church Development and Church Growth

Having been encouraged by the resolution of the 208th General Assembly (1996) on Racial Ethnic New Church Development and Redevelopment, the 25th Annual Assembly (1996) of the NCKPC appointed a New Church Development committee (NCD) with a goal of increasing the number of Korean-American congregations in the PC(USA) from 300 to 500 by 2006. The NCD Committee supported by the NCKPC and the Korean Congregational Support Office has been laboring for six years to develop policies and strategies, to raise funds and to implement the programs.

  Committee on Mission Cooperation (CMC)

The CMC, active as a special committee of NCKPC since 1999, was formed to aspire to "Witnessing & Mission" as the mission of the church, to cooperate with WMD of the denomination, to disseminate information and opportunities of mission to member churches and to work closely with Korean-American missionaries. The Committee consists of six regional representatives, a NKPM representative, a NKPW representative and ex-officio members from NCKPC and GA office. Some of the activities include:

1) Hunger relief aid for North Korea: The NCKPC member churches have been encouraged to observe one Sunday in August (Sunday before August 15, Independence Day for the Koreans) with special offering for hunger relief aid for North Korean people. The fund was channeled through WMD to North Korea to manufacture noodles to feed the hungry.

2) A joint resolution was signed between CMC of NCKPC and WMD of PC(USA) to take cooperative steps in three specific areas of mission collaboration:

  1. Support of two mission personnel who are to be installed at 2003 NCKPC annual assembly
  2. Feasibility study of new church development project in Ciudad Obregon of Mexico
  3. Sharing of denominational short-term mission opportunities with NCKPC member congregations to encourage their participation. [Read More].

Leadership development for 2nd generation Korean Americans

Jointly with the office of Asian-American Leadership Development of CMD, the NCKPC developed and implemented several programs to nurture and network the clergy and lay leaders of second generation Korean-Americans. CKAM (Coalition of Korean-American Ministry, a group of English-speaking young pastors), KAYALC (Korean-American Young Adults Leadership Coalition, a group of English-speaking young adults), NKPCC (National Korean Presbyterian College Council) and NKPYC (Korean-American Presbyterian Youth Council) are the organizations to nurture the next generation Korean-Americans. Annual conference and leadership training workshops are in place and funded by NCKPC, Korean Congregation Enhancement Office of NMD and Asian-American Leadership Development Office of NMD. Visit the Asian American Information Ministries Web site for Annual Conferences, programs and activities of these organizations.

The 38th NKPC Assembly. Photo by Charles Chae.

Dear NKPC colleagues,
Greetings in the name of our good Lord Jesus Christ,

Glory and praises and thanks be to our Lord who by the grace and power has accomplished abundantly far more than we can ask or imagine in our lives and ministries. The 38th NKPC annual assembly that was held last week in Baltimore was abundantly blessed by excellent speakers who have clearly chartered the way the church should walk in this world as revealed in the word of God and in the tradition of Reformed faith. We have printed extra copies of program book that includes somewhat lengthy but worthy-to-read keynote articles and other NKPC reports. The program book will be distributed through KPC chairs to every NKPC congregation that was not present at the assembly so that all NKPC pastoral leaders are on the same page for solidarity and mutual support for the common goal of ministry for the Kingdom of God on earth.

One key decision of the 2009 assembly was the unanimous approval of the name change of our national body from National Korean Presbyterian Council (NKPC), PC(USA) to “National Council of Korean Presbyterian Churches (NCKPC), PC(USA)”. Thus, the acronym will be NCKPC. New Executive Committee was elected and EM pastors and congregations will be represented by the Rev. Jin S. Kim, pastor of the Church of All Nations. Even though I do not intend to write NCKPC’s goals/hopes/strategies in detail in English for English-speaking pastors at this time, the NCKPC promises a stronger connection and mutual support with EM congregations and leaders through the Rev. Jin S. Kim and other key leaders.

The Rev. Yushin Lee
