The Interfaith Listening Program builds understanding and relationships

This annual program brings inter-religious teams from a variety of countires to the United States for visits in local communities. Those who have hosted teams in past years and team members themselves agree that interaction with Interfaith Listening Teams makes a difference for those involved. Stereotypes are replaced with direct experience and interaction; new information and perspectives are shared; interfaith connections here in the United States are begun or nurtured; and the teams return home with a changed understanding of the United States and a stronger commitment to their own interfaith work.

A DVD provides an 8 ½ minute overview of the program, and additional audio-visual and print resources.

Visit of team from Pakistan to be rescheduled

The Interfaith Listening Program will bring the Rev. Dr. Maqsood Kamil, executive secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Pakistan, and Mr. Khuram Dastgir Khan, elected member of Pakistan’s National Parliament from the Muslim League Party, to six presbyteries at the earliest time possible. Their visit had to be postponed due to events in Pakistan. The team will visit churches and colleges, talk with men’s and women’s groups, and engage in ecumenical and interfaith gatherings. For more information, contact Jay T. Rock in the Office of Interfaith Relations.

2007 team made many new friends

The Rev. Marilou Rezane and Hadja Sharifa Mufalla are still present in the hearts of many who met them during their visits here in the United States. The Christian-Muslim team went to six presbyteries and talked with over 1,600 people about Christian-Muslim relations, human rights and ecological concerns in Mindanao. Read a brief summary of this team's visits and learn about our two guests.

The 2006 Team Visits

From October 28 to November 12, 2006, the Rev. Angele Wilson Dogbe and Ms. Shaney Swaleh Salim visited many communities in the United States. The two women work together through the Program for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa. They spoke about women in sub-Saharan Africa, about efforts to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic there and the realities and challenges of living and working together as women of different faiths. Read a brief summary of this team's visits and learn about our two guests.

Another Round of Team Visits Completed

On October 10, 2004, the 10 Christian-Muslim teams got on airplanes to go back to their homes.  It was hard to see them go, because they had brought us so much, shared so much of themselves and in many cases become friends.

The teams came from Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Niger, Pakistan, the Philippines, Syria and South Africa. They visited colleges, Presbyterian and other Christian and Muslim congregations, community centers and homes in towns and cities of 36 presbyteries in  28 states.

They told stories of their relationships and of the interfaith work they do at home, and answered many questions about Islam and the issues they face in the contexts in which they live. From the many reports that their visits generated, three will give you a glimpse into these visits:

See brief descriptions of where the teams went and what they did in 2004. Learn more about our guests.

What about the future?

It depends on us!  It takes many people working together in local communities, and an investment of our funds, to make a program like this happen.  Find out more about how to support the program.

Pilot Program Video

After September 11, 2001, the General Assembly approved a program in Christian-Muslim relations, the Interfaith Listening Pilot Project. Overseas partners were invited to send two-person teams, consisting of one Christian and one Muslim, to the United States to meet with Presbyterians and talk about Muslim-Christian relations in their countries. This video recounts that event and is intended to serve PC(USA) congregations as a model of Christian-Muslim dialogue, with the hope that it will inspire congregations to organize interfaith events in their own communities.

Part 1 is 15 minutes, 37 seconds and part 2 is 21 minutes, 21 seconds. A study guide is included.
