Christmas /New Year /Lunar New Year

Dear Friends,

Once again the time has come for an annual Christmas and New Year letter. As we look back over the past year we give thanks for many things—for friends and family, for good health, for special study and travel opportunities, for the joy of our vocation as mission co-workers of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) involved in theological education, and for all of you who have faithfully supported us with your prayers and letters and financial gifts.

This is, of course, the season for the giving and receiving of gifts, and for those of us who are professors, there is perhaps no greater gift than to visit our former students as they faithfully serve in so many ways. This past semester, during a brief visit to Taiwan, we were blessed by being able to see three of our former students—Ms. Chong Yang-Soon and her husband the Reverend Chu Sok-Kyu, who are serving as missionaries in the southern city of Kaohsiung, and the Reverend Chi Yuan-An, who is serving as the pastor of the Neihu Presbyterian Church in a suburb of Taipei. Chong Yang-Soon was our student when Hanil was still a women’s seminary, and her husband studied social welfare after the school became Hanil University. Following a number of years of pastoral service in Korea, the family went to Taiwan, where they now serve as missionaries under the Paul Mission, an outreach program of the Antioch Presbyterian Church in Jeonju. What a joy it was to be with them and see how God is blessing them in their new field of service.

The Reverend Chi Yuan-An was our student back in the 1970s when we served on the faculty of Taiwan Theological College. A number of years later, he came to Korea and studied at Hamil University for one year in the Asia Mission Center program, the forerunner to the Asia Pacific Graduate School of Theological Studies. Back then it was a non-degree program, but his year in Korea greatly enriched Rev. Chi’s ministry. We visited him and his family, and on Sunday, Dan preached in Rev. Chi’s church. He is the only person who has been our student both in Taiwan and in Korea. We rejoiced with him as we experienced the warm fellowship in his lively, growing church.

In late December and early January we will be journeying to Myanmar (Burma) for a second time to teach and lecture in theological schools there. We have about 20 Asia Pacific Graduate School of Theological Studies alumni serving in Myanmar, and it will be a time of thanksgiving as we see how God is working in and through our former students as they teach, preach, do ecumenical and social work, and serve as pioneer missionaries. We give thanks that Hanil University and the Korean church has been able to contribute so much to the church in Myanmar.

Each time we visit a Korean church and see our former students faithfully serving our Lord, we give thanks for the opportunity to serve in theological education. Our students are God’s gifts to us and we are truly blessed. Therefore, at this Christmas and New Year season we give thanks to God for “his unspeakable gift” in Jesus and for the opportunity of seeing our former students sharing Jesus with others.

It is our prayer that you might have a blessed Christmas season and a New Year filled with hope as we give thanks to God for the joy of gifts.

Faithfully in mission,

Carol Chou Adams and Daniel J. Adams
