A letter from Sook Hee Bae in Korea

October 13, 2006

Greetings from Korea.

It has been quite a while since I wrote my last newsletter. I am busy as usual here in Korea. Korea just has celebrated “Chu Suk” which is a holiday similar to Thanksgiving. During this three-day holiday (October 5, 6 and 7), most families travel to their hometown to visit relatives and parents. Chu Suk is one of the most joyful holidays, and Koreans are very happy to maintain their traditional values.

Photo of five women in white robes with red crosses on the front.
Baptism 2006. These women are survivors of domestic violence who accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
But the bad news from North Korea has dampened our spirits. Right after Chu Suk, North Korea announced that they had conducted a nuclear test. This is shocking news that poses a big threat for not only to South Korea but also to global peace. The South Korean and U.S. governments are
preparing contingency plans to meet the North Korean threat. I believe that this is the time to pray for God’s help for global peace.

I think currently there is no clear answer to solve this problem without God’s help. Korean churches and their leaders are praying for God’s help. Christians get together ecumenically for dawn prayer services and regular Sunday services to seek God’s answer for peace on the Korean peninsula. I ask PC(USA) to pray for Korea (North and South) and for global peace.

I attended General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Korean (PCK) from on September 18 to 20, and I realized that we still need to empower women’s ministries here in the PCK. There were only 10 women delegates (two clergy and eight elders) among the 1,500 delegates. Although this is an improvement from a   Photo of a group of women and children. There is mountain scenery in the background.
During the summer of 2006, we held a picnic for staff and friends of the Family Shelter for Domestic Violence Survivors at Bukak Mountain.

few years ago, I would like to see more women delegates for the coming General Assemblies.

Sook Hee Bae was the featured speaker at the 2006 Summer Spiritual Rereat at Andong,

I’ll finish my newsletter with a happier story. I regularly attend the Ye Ji church, which is the memorial church for women’s ordination in the PCK. Most congregation members are survivors of domestic violence or run-away juveniles from the shelter. The sound system of this church was very poor. When the pastor preaches, it is hard to understand because of the echo and noises. Since the Ye Ji church doesn’t have the resources to replace the system, my husband K.J. and I raised a special offering, and the result was a new sound system was installed at Ye Ji church last month. Praise the Lord! Now everybody is happy to hear God’s messages clearly on Sunday.

This small change may seem like a little thing, but I thank God for this gift, and I am sure that it will help the survivors of domestic violence and juveniles at the shelter, who have never had a chance to know Jesus Christ, to become Christians and have a closer relationship to God.

Peace,

Rev. Sook Hee Bae
