A letter from Shirley Birth in Egypt

December 2002

Dear Friends,

This is the easiest way to send Christmas greetings, and I am thankful for it! I wish you all a most blessed Christmas and New Year.

Things in Egypt continue to be most interesting, happy, and safe. As I write this, I am in the Dialysis Department. Do you understand why these people who are connected to hemodialysis machines are on them? Without the machines and the care of these wonderful nurses and doctors, they are condemned to death, and some of them are so young. With this hospital and this department, they are able to live a normal life. If this were the only department in the hospital, it would be well worth our being here.

"I had decided to spend Christmas in Tanta, but the youth have convinced me that I should go to Cairo to be with them."

But I want to tell you about the wonderful weekend I had last week. For three days, I had five visitors from Cairo. They were Young Adult Volunteers sent by the Worldwide Ministries Division of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to spend a year in Egypt. The one man is Juan Carlos Lopez. He was born in Chile, moved with his parents to France when he was one year old, became a French citizen, and now teaches French in Cairo, Egypt, with a Spanish accent. Another is a young lady from South Africa, who teaches English. Then there is Cathy Chang, who is a Korean American, and two other young ladies, Julie and Sherri, from two diverse states. What wonderful, dedicated young people, and such a joy to be with.

I had decided to spend Christmas in Tanta, but the youth have convinced me that I should go to Cairo to be with them. I cooked spaghetti for them the first night and invited my English conversation student, Mohamed, to join us. On the second day they went to Alexandria and returned that evening. I invited the medical director of the hospital to join us, and he furnished the food for a chicken dinner. I didn't realize how tired I was, and after baking a pie, I started to defrost and skin the chicken, but I knew I needed help. I prayed for a helper, and the doorbell rang. It was Mohamed. He wanted to know if I needed and help, and he sure helped! He prepared at least half the dinner, even though he couldn't join us. The Lord surely provides.

I became a godmother this summer when Stephen Kerolles Rami was born. What a joy he is, and growing so fast. I dread to think of leaving here and not seeing him grow up.

Again, my best wishes for a wonderful Christmas, and hopefully a peaceful 2003.

Grace, peace and love,

Shirley
