A letter from Jay and Susan Boone in China

October 2005

Dear Friends,

We have begun our third year in Wuhan, It’s much easier to return to a known situation than to begin a new one, so it has been easy to fit back into the life here. We’ve enjoyed meeting our friends and colleagues again, and we’ve settled into the routine of classes and building relationships. Jay is teaching international economic law for the Economics Department; he expects to begin a course in property law for students working on their master’s in cooperation with a university in Birmingham, England. Susan is teaching those same students oral English as they prepare to do further study abroad. One reason that we’re happy to return to this school is that they have given us a light enough schedule that we have time to do some of the extra curricular activities with students and friends.

We spent four days visiting our former Chinese teaching colleagues in Hangzhou over the October holiday, which celebrates China’s National Day. These are women who attended Susan’s conversation class for experienced teachers. Many of them have become believers and it’s such a joy to return and to see how they are maturing. We attended an English language Bible study with them and visited the new seminary and lay training center.

The church in Hangzhou is multiplying and there are two new church buildings in the city. We visited both and came away amazed at the dynamic changes that are taking place. We were also in touch with the pastors and teachers from the church and seminary that we knew and worked with when we were there.

The pastor of the church we attended at the time was Sun Xi Pei. He was 75 years old then, in 1998. Last week he escorted us out to the new seminary and while we were on the church bus, he shared that last month he had married again (his wife passed away 10 years ago). He was one who suffered during the hard times but did not let them rob him of joy.

We told him that we thought that he was very “young at heart.” Pastor “Luke” studied in England for three years and is now trying to start new programs for youth in the church. It is so thrilling to see all that is taking place there and to be able to share in their joy.

Here in Wuhan, we continue to attend Thanksgiving Church and to fellowship with the Chinese believers there and also with some students who attend the local seminary. Lucy, a seminary student from Guanxi Province, called when we returned and told us how much she missed us during the summer. We’ve already shared two meals with her and others and hope to be able to continue our times of fellowship with them. They would like to be able to attend English lessons with Susan, and we hope and pray that it will work out. Thanksgiving Church is experiencing some internal disagreements now, which has many people upset, so we do ask for prayer for the church and the groups that are involved.

Thank you for your prayers and your support. It means so much to us to know that you are part of our ministry here through your prayers and your gifts. We ask continued prayer for our various health issues and prayer that the Lord will help us to build relationships that are to His glory. Please feel free to let us know of any prayer requests that you may have.

With love and blessings,

Susan and Jay Boone
