A letter from Esther Wakeman and Robert Collins in Thailand

April 2005

Resurrection greetings from Chiang Mai, Thailand:

It’s hot season here; a resurrection miracle season. There is almost no rain, but the trees burst into bright blossoms of orange, yellow, red, and purple. It’s a nature parable of resurrection that blesses my heart each year. When life is at its driest and bleakest, beauty and life show up miraculously.

As a family we are resting in the hope of a resurrection miracle. As you may have seen on our November 2004 letter on the PC(USA) “Mission Connections” Web site, our son Paul has significant personal struggles that challenge us all. We are happy that he was released from prison and has been living at home since the end of January. We are grateful for a new counseling center in Chiang Mai set up for missionary families. As I have mentioned before, Chiang Mai is a hub for missionaries who work throughout Asia, and this new center is much needed. We are finding family therapy sessions most helpful. We’re grateful that Paul’s brother Nathan, and his sisters, Anna and Kris, are also living here in Chiang Mai now, and we are enjoying lots of good family time.

Praise God for physical freedom for Paul, and for family together in Chiang Mai.

Please pray that Paul will find freedom from addiction, and choose the abundant life that God made him for. Pray that as his parents we will provide the support and love he most needs at this time. Pray for lots of joy as a family.

On the work front, Payap University’s school year is winding down. Our student ministry volunteer staff report that about 70 students have been participating regularly in mentoring relationships and discipleship programs. This is an increase over the past couple years, but it is still only 1 percent of our students. We need a full-time student ministry staff person, to develop a network of student cell groups throughout the university.

Evening Devotions create space to meet God.

Thank God for watermelon and new friends during our work camp.

Praise God for growth in numbers of students becoming Jesus’ disciples.

Pray for a full-time student ministry staff person and multiplication of new disciples to 10 percent of our students.

Our chaplain’s office just completed two international work camps with Japanese Christian universities: International Christian University and Keisen University. We helped to build a new church building in a village about three hours north of Chiang Mai. The students get lots of chances to practice their English and Japanese language skills, and work, play and pray together. Most of the students are not Christian, but we enjoy morning and evening devotional times and sing Christian songs, and have the chance to get to know students well, and talk about life, and share the ways we have experienced the resurrection miracle of new life in Christ.

Praise God for summer work camp time with students.

Pray for fruit in the kingdom of God through these camps.

The Thai drama team of the Christian Communications Institute is finishing up their cold-season tour of churches in which they perform the traditional Thai drama likay plays. During April and May they’ll prepare the music and plays for the coming school year’s spiritual emphasis weeks in schools around the country. The theme this year is “Power for Living!” Rob is corresponding with lots of churches to set up our next U.S. tour from September 23 through the end of October 2005. We’ll be in northern California, the Southeast, and the Midwest, including the Washington, D.C. area. If your church is interested in hosting our group, please contact us by email as soon as possible (robes@pobox.com).

Praise God for 35 likay performances at about 20 churches that shared the good news of God’s love to about 10,000 Thai people from December through March.

Pray that the team will put together an awesome program to inspire young people to find “Power for Living!” through a relationship with the Creator of the universe. Pray also that our tour preparations will follow God’s ideas and plans for us.

Thank you again for your notes, prayers, and support for our family and this work. The past year has had its dry and bleak moments, but we are grateful for many bright joyful blossoms in the midst of it. The miracle of resurrection, new life, and new beginnings is real. We are all growing, and we are watching God work through us and through many others at Payap University. We are grateful to be your partners in mission in Thailand. Please continue to hold us up in your prayers.

In Christ,

Esther Wakeman (for Rob Collins, too)
