A letter from Frank and Nancy Dimmock in Malawi

December 8, 2003

Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done.
Ps. 105:1

Dear Friends,

What a year it has been. Our whole family—minus Frank who was attending a family reunion in the United States—gathered around a very small, but real turkey on Thanksgiving and shared what we were thankful for.

Jesse was thankful for her baby brother, Isaac. A year ago his life and future were in the balance. This year he is a healthy, big-eyed, beautiful, babbling toddler and a delight to the whole family.

Katie was thankful for her friend Ashley's recovery. Fourteen year-old Ashley was biking around her home when something got stuck in her spokes and she flew over the handle bars and landed on her face. She was flown to South Africa for emergency treatment for a broken nose and concussion. Answered prayer included no brain damage and a quick recovery.

Andrew missed his Dad and was thankful that he was coming home soon.

Alifa was beside herself with the joy of having her big brothers and sister home from boarding school.

Moses was thankful for a very successful soccer season. He was co-captain of the varsity team, which was 13-2 for the season. He was also top scorer, with 20 goals, and was given the award for best sportsmanship. We are so very proud of him.

Nathan was thankful for the end of term and for getting home. It was a long, hard term that included an incredible flu epidemic with over 100 students in the high school and several staff out of commission at its peak. It meant a lot of make-up work and a lot of pressure. In spite of all that, he managed to bring home a 3.0 average! He and Moses also sent in their college applications (to schools in North Carolina and east Tennessee). We can’t wait to see where they are accepted and where they will decide to go.

This mama’s heart was overflowing with thankfulness to God for His faithfulness throughout the year. What a joy to have all seven children around the table, sharing a special meal, laughing and talking. But I also had to express my thankfulness for the privilege of caring for a much larger family this year—a family that included 35 infants that came and went through the Crisis Nursery, each one precious in God’s sight, given a future and a hope because He lives and cares.

Frank wasn’t with us at the Thanksgiving table, but expressed his thanks later. He is thankful for his family, for the opportunity to be with his parents and siblings in the United States, for the chance to cool off after the heat of Malawi, and for a year rich in relationships and making headway in the fight against HIV/AIDS on the continent.

Several meetings have been held this year in eastern and southern Africa giving opportunities for church leaders and others to share responses and experiences in dealing with the AIDS epidemic. Many have gone home enriched, encouraged and eager to try some of these strategies. In October, there was a workshop held in Malawi organized by the PC(USA). It brought together representatives from partner churches from many countries in Africa to discuss and share ideas and practical responses to the problem. A wonderful sense of unity and enthusiasm was generated among this incredibly diverse group. They returned home determined to make a difference in their church and in their world.

Praise the Lord.… Praise Him for His acts of power; Praise Him for his surpassing greatness.Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!
Psalm 150

With love from all the Dimmocks,

Frank, Nancy, Nathan, Moses, Jesse, Katie, Andrew, Alifa and Isaac
