A letter from Frank and Nancy Dimmock in Malawi

July 11, 2005

Dear Friends,

The wiring had caught fire for the third time in as many days. The babies were all safe, but the caregivers’ nerves were on edge. The electrician came to the nursery yet again and said, “It is necessary to rewire this house. It was not wired properly for the heavy use of a dryer, washing machine, and electric cooker.” We thought that we had taken care of this problem before signing the final certificate with the builders, but apparently we had not. We asked the electrician to do an estimate of the cost. He came back with a list of necessary supplies, plus estimated labor and certification fee and a bottom line of MK87,000 (Malawi Kwacha). At the current exchange rate of MK125 equals one U.S. dollar, so the total cost came to $700.

In late June, a group of 13 young people and four adults set out from northern California for a mission trip to Malawi. Upon arrival these young people spent several days at an orphan day care center north of the capital city. There they helped to feed the kids the only meal most of them would get each day, and conducted a vacation Bible school in the afternoons. Sharing laughter, food and information enriched lives on both sides of the cultural and material divide. They came back to the city and spent a day with the babies in the Crisis Nursery. Some held and played with the babies, while others sorted and organized bottles and baby clothes. We all enjoyed their visit and appreciated their help.

The rest of their two-week stay was spent doing outreach with the youth of their partner church. Kafita CCAP (Church of Central Africa Presbyterian) is an 8,000-member Presbyterian church in Lilongwe. Their special relationship with Piedmont Community Church began in 2003.

On July 2, this group of 17- and 18-year old California youth met to debrief and disburse leftover funds, prior to their departure for home. They dropped off an envelope at my house the next day, on their way to the airport. In it was $700 designated for the Crisis Nursery—$600 from the youth themselves, and $100 from a friend in Piedmont.

The house is being rewired as I write.

Over and over again, the Lord has proved Himself faithful to meet the needs of the babies. And we want to give Him all the praise —and His generous “instruments” our thanks.
