A letter from Ellen Dozier in Guatemala

April 2003

Dear Friends,

First Sara stood to share the story of how God had worked a miracle in the life of her son: His car, which had been stolen, was returned to him! She described in detail the events that led up to the robbery, how because of mechanical failure the robber had abandoned the car, which her son recovered some hours later. Then Juana, Albina, and Graciela shared their stories of how God had worked in the lives of their children. God spoke to Juana’s daughter in a dream and led her back to her church family. Graciela’s daughter was spared almost certain death in a car accident. God had rescued Albina’s son from the clutches of alcohol and restored him to his family.

Tears filled my eyes as I listened to Sonia testify to God’s presence with her after the sudden death of her 50-year-old husband. I remembered Sonia’s profound grief as she knelt beside the tomb of her husband, sobbing, not wanting to leave. “My family and I have been severely tested, but God has always been with us and given us the strength we needed,” she said, and I marveled at the depth and certainty of her faith.

As the women tell their stories, amid tears of gratitude and grief, they know this does not mean all their problems are solved and life is smooth—just the opposite! Life will always be difficult for these women; they know that. They also know “from whence my help comes,” from the Lord. As I listened to these women, their stories echoed the countless stories of God’s power and work that I have heard since I came to Guatemala some seven years ago. I felt as though I were surrounded by a great “cloud of witnesses” for whom God is as real and close as the child they hold in their arms or the husband with whom they share life.

When I first came to Guatemala and heard stories such as these I was very impressed with the depth of faith. As I continued to hear stories using the same old familiar language, “God saved me,” “praise the Lord,” “it was the Lord’s will,” with everything “washed in the blood of Jesus,” I became a bit skeptical. “Is this for real?” I wondered. Now, after living here for some seven years, I know it is for real! In one sense women here have little or no power, as the world defines power; few have financial resources; they do not own their homes or a car; they do not hold political office or have an educational degree. What they do have is the power of prayer!   The testimony of these women to the power and presence of God is a daily witness to Ellen.

This is a power that seems to come only to those who acknowledge that they are, in the words of the psalmist, “sheep of God’s pasture.” They have no illusion that they can work miracles, bring about new life, for themselves or their family; but they know that God can!

As I travel about Guatemala, I watch as women enter a sanctuary and before greeting others, before any other activity, they walk to the front of the sanctuary and kneel in prayer.

I listen over and over to the refrain, “pray for my husband, my son, my neighbor, my daughter, only God can help us.”

I hold the hand of a wife whose husband (a pastor) had died two days before in a car accident; she lies in a hospital bed and smiles in response to my words, “may God give you strength.” She squeezes my hand to assure me that she firmly believes that God will do just that.

I share life with women from many different cultures, a variety of economic and social backgrounds, and many different levels of education; all bound together as mothers, wives, bearers of the faith, people of prayer and deep faith. I am blessed to share life with these women of faith, my “cloud of witnesses,” whose testimony to the power and presence of God in these lives is a daily witness to me.
