A letter from Barbara Easton in Japan

March 7, 2005

Dear Friends in Christ,

Let us together give thanks to our Creator for seasons of new beginnings. Winter may seem to drag through wet, gray days, but there are also some blue skies with only small clouds, reminding us of the warmth of God’s love which surrounds us. Kwassui Gakuin, where I teach in the Women’s College, also celebrates in this season.

We marked our 125th anniversary as an educational institution on December 1, 2004, and look forward to many continued years of service in women’s education based on Christian principles. As our graduates commence new phases of life, we pray that they will be guided and encouraged by God’s Spirit reminding them of what they have been taught at Kwassui.

The end of January was the retirement date for Kwassui chancellor and chairperson of the Board of Regents, Mr. Yuzuru Hirohata, who had been a professor of Japanese literature from the starting years of Kwassui Women’s College in the early 1980s, and it was also the time of selection of a new chairperson, Mr. Yoshito Yamaguchi, and of the advancement of our Professor Noboru Nonomura to serve as chancellor in addition to his previous position as president of the college and junior college. The latter will be closing after this year’s graduation in March, but the former continues opening new programs as the competition for student intake in Japan is increasing.

When Mr. Yamaguchi spoke at the installation of the new chancellor, he reminded everyone that Kwassui Gakuin “belongs to God.” We are just called to fulfill responsibilities and offer service with this organization, and while the person chosen to be the director is the one to take charge, it is God who directs the way we are to go.

Chancellor Nonomura also recognized the importance of having an organization that functions well, and said that he makes no claim to be “Superman” as some decisions may call for discernment like that for which King Solomon prayed in I Kings 3:9: “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad....” At the end of March, Kwassui Junior-Senior High School will also be having a new principal.

Meanwhile, our students are entering spring vacation period, and our graduates will be going out into the wider world to work, or to study further, or in some cases to become full-time homemakers. Yoriko, who attended after-school Bible study through four years of college, is one of the latter. Yuko, who also attended that group, is hoping to study criminology in the United States. Shiho, who has been a faithful participant in Nagasaki Church, including the Bible study group, hopes to begin teaching English soon.

I am setting out today with eight students of English for a short-term study program in Nottingham, England. Please pray that they may learn more of our Lord Jesus Christ through encounters there. We are to return to Nagasaki by March 17.

The new academic year begins on April 1. At the end of the semester in late July I am scheduled to spend several weeks in the United States, partly based in rural Wyoming with my sister’s family. It would be good if I could share some of my Japanese experiences with you this summer. Please contact me about further details.   Photograph of two men sitting behind an elaborate desk or dais. During this season leading up to Easter, may we turn our hearts even more toward God in response to the overwhelming love shown through our Lord Jesus Christ.

In his service,

Barbara Easton
