Lima, Peru
Dear Friends,
Here in Peru, we’re shaking our heads in amazement. Here’s
a former high-ranking U.S. government representative—a career
veteran in the fight against poverty—who has chosen to dedicate
six months of his life to raise awareness about hunger in Peru.
In March this year, Tom Geiger, former country director for the
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) here in Peru,
began the 2,173 mile Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain,
Georgia, and he has less than 100 miles to go before he reaches
the end of the trail at Mount Katahdin, Maine!
Tom knows well the work of our Joining Hands Network:
- To support the implementation of Peru’s National Truth
and Reconciliation Commission’s findings to bring justice
and development to the orphans and widows left behind after
20 years of Peru’s bloody political violence.
- To increase the income of Peruvian artisans living in extreme
poverty between 100 and 350 percent.
- To accompany the children in La Oroya, Peru, nearly 100 percent
of whom have lead-poisioning due to the excessive toxic emissions
of a U.S.-owned smelter there.
The attached link will take you to our network’s Spanish
language Web page: www.manosperu.org. If you’d like to receive
monthly updates, just drop us a note: secretaria@manosperu.org.
Many of you have supported Tom’s hike in prayer or pledged
a contribution to support the Joining Hands Network of Peru (some
pledged a total amount, others pledged an amount per mile). On
behalf of Tom and our network: Thank you! Your tax-deductible
gift can be sent to:
