Letter from Glen and Carol Hallead in Thailand

August 22, 2005

Dear Friends,

Perhaps you have a distant memory of having helped to fund some form of transportation for a mission co-worker or ministry partner through an Extra Commitment Opportunity (ECO) account. In our case, generous PC(USA) congregations funded a vehicle to help transport the short-term mission teams and individuals here in Thailand. The van has become known as the “CVT Van,” Christian Volunteers in Thailand van, and has provided many wonderful opportunities for ministry.

Photograph of a grey van at night with its wheels half-submerged in muddy water.
The Halleads' van stopped at a local food shop (up the street from the more serious flooding) to pick up some food for a group of 12 people who were busy sandbagging a computer hardware ministry shop.

The cook at the food shop is standing on a crate in order to keep his feet dry as he cooks.

Just this week we were reminded of the importance of that kind of faithful giving when the van was used to transport sand bags, food, and other materials to people in the flooded areas of Chiang Mai around my office. There is a special attribute of the van that made this possible—one we weren’t aware of when we bought it some four years ago: It takes in air through a vent in the side of the van that is one meter off the ground. This meant that we were able to “navigate” waters that most other vehicles couldn’t.

It’s ministry opportunities like this that make mission co-workers especially thankful for supporters like you. Your gifts do make a difference.

Say a prayer for those folks still bailing water (some waters have not yet receeded) and those stuck with cleaning up the fine clay mud-type residue. And while you’re before the throne of grace, thank God that over four years ago faithful Presbyterian were moved to provide a gift that just keeps blessing others.

In gratitude,

Glen
