A letter from Harry and Debbie Horne in Guatemala

January 30, 2003
Coban, Guatemala

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! After the last somewhat depressing letter, it is good to be able to let you know that we have been reassigned within Guatemala. Harry will be teaching in the theological education program of the Centro Evangélico de Estudios Pastorales en Centro America, CEDEPCA. We will be living in the small city of Coban, north of Guatemala City. Debbie will look into opportunities to serve when we get there.

CEDEPCA works with a variety of denominations. Harry will begin teaching next week with a group that includes Nazarene, Baptist, and at least one Pentecostal student. They are leaders in their churches, men and women, who want to further their theological education in a university level theological education program. We anticipate that at least some of these students will become leaders in the theological education programs of their denominations.

"In the process, receiving theological education in this interdenominational setting has the potential to unite Christians of various denominations in looking for and working so that God's Kingdom might be coming and God's will be done in this part of God's green earth."

Although Coban itself is relatively sophisticated, secular education in the surrounding area is very limited. The theological education programs of the denominations reflect this. CEDEPCA offers students a chance for students to continue to grow in their understanding of the Word of God. In the process, receiving theological education in this interdenominational setting has the potential to unite Christians of various denominations in looking for and working so that God's Kingdom might be coming and God's will be done in this part of God's green earth.

And it is green in the Coban area, all year-round. The area is one of exceptional physical beauty. We are looking forward to the chance to explore the wonders of God's creation.

We are also looking forward to other opportunities to teach here. Harry is already assigned to begin teaching in Chiquimula in eastern Guatemala later in the year, commuting from Coban. There are other possibilities that may open up as well. The leadership of CEDEPCA is open to working with a variety of sisters and brothers in a variety of settings. (In addition to the program in which I (Harry) am currently teaching, CEDEPCA has programs in women's ministry and in receiving North American church groups who want to visit Guatemala.)

So, we begin anew in Guatemala! Please continue to support us with your prayers, as we continue to pray for you all in your various ministries.

Shalom,

Debbie and Harry Horne
