A letter from Hannah and Joseph Kang in Russia

June 2006

Dear Friends,

Zdrastvite!

A tug of war between the long cold winter and staggering spring is now over. Spring is finally in full swing in this part of Russia! The White Night festivals were kicked off a few weeks ago, and tourists began to rush into this historic city where preparation for the forthcoming G-8 summit meeting is vividly underway. If anyone who has been to Russia before were to see Russia now, they would easily see difference: newer cars, more expensive foreign cars, more cars, which means more traffic jams, but at same time, driving manners have improved and streets are now marked with lanes. (Until recently, there were no lines on the road marking the traffic lanes, even on major streets.) The returning visitor would also see many newly opened supermarkets where you can pay for goods by credit card.

Chapel for students at the extension program. Joe enjoyed teaching these highly motivated students over Easter break.
As we mentioned in our last newsletter, Joe enjoyed teaching students in the extension program during Easter break. They were highly motivated, although some of them were over 60 years old. The next program is scheduled for the middle of August, when Joe will be teaching the topic of “sin and forgiveness in the Old and New Testament.”

Two of three graduating students were supposed to go to the States for practical work at ELCA (Evangelical Church of America) summer camps, but only one student, Andei, got the entry visa, and he is now in the States. Another student’s visa application was rejected because of his lack of English proficiency. He has found something else to do here at the seminary. The third one is a female student from Azerbaijan. Her name is Menza Ismailowa. She is going to work as a director of the Sheki Training Center and Farm for Vulnerable Girls in her country upon her graduation from this seminary. As you may know, Azerbaijan is the Islamic country, and you cannot do anything in the name of the Christian church. Her project is to be sponsored by the Norwegian Humanitarian Enterprise. We are so proud of training her and providing her with theological and pastoral knowledge for this challenging missionary work.

Photo of a broad river under a blue sky. Monuments are visible along the shoreline. Spring has finally won its tug of war with winter. Proof of this is that the Neva River has melted.

In late June we are moving to housing on the seminary campus, since a German colleague who has been teaching New Testament subjects is finishing his term and leaving the seminary for good. Joe’s workload will become heavier than it was before, as he is going to be in charge of all the biblical subjects, both Old and New Testaments.

Your ongoing support and prayers for our ministry are very much appreciated. Without your care and support we couldn’t continue this exciting ministry, especially under the current financially stressful situation of our national church. We would like to draw your attention to how you could make contributions for missionary support: “Second Mile Missionary Support, E132192.” Several General Assemblies have called for expansion of the missionary force. Gifts to this account expand the capacity to respond to our partners’ many requests for international mission workers. You may make your precious contributions as follows:

Contributions from individuals may be sent to:
