Biannual Mission Report

Dear Friends,

Churches all over Taiwan are joining to share the good news of peace during the lunar calendar’s seventh month. According to Taiwan’s folk religion, this month is the time when hungry ghosts are set free from hell to wander the earth. Offerings to gods are not efficacious in preventing the ghosts’ wrath. Only by making elaborate sacrifices to the "friendly brothers" can they be persuaded not to cause troubles. So churches are proclaiming, "If Taiwan’s gods are not able to overcome the ghosts, then they are not able to save anyone. But Jesus is greater than those gods, and can carry us through ghost month in peace, Jesus’s gift to you during this month is peace."

"The churches said, ‘Ghost month brings fear, but Christian faith emphasizes the love of God. Where there is love, fear is cast out.’"

Presbyterian churches are holding united programs, inviting neighbors to a "Festival of Love and Peace." One of their techniques is to proclaim every day of ghost month to be "Peace Day." The churches said, "Ghost month brings fear, but Christian faith emphasizes the love of God. Where there is love, fear is cast out." They call on church members to be different from secular people, who abstain from many common activities during ghost month for fear of being harmed. "Every day for a Christian is a day of celebration. Every day is a day for the grace of God to be made manifest. Therefore we should rejoice."

As our Campus Ministry Center has participated in the "Festival of Love and Peace," we have offered many opportunities to our students to introduce their not-yet-believing neighbors to the Lord. It is true Taiwan’s folk religion is a major barrier to spreading the good news to the Taiwan people. In this environment we try to make good programs for the college students to let them know that Jesus Christ is our Lord. With God’s mercy and grace, we pray that we can reach out to more people to love the Lord.

Our activities in our center so far this year consist of the following:

For the first time, our Hualien Aboriginal College Student Committee planned the 2002 year’s program in January. We worked very hard to reach this goal. We published our first newsletter in February and held a two-day training retreat for our committee members at Tianshiang mountain in May. We also had a two-day praise night and worship at the Bunong tribe’s church. In June, we had a four-day summer camp at Orchid Island. In August, we held the first, four-day Aboriginal College Student Bible Study Conference at the Yushan Theological Seminary, and we also went to the Ari Mountain to prepare for 2003's College Winter Camp.

The praise night and worship at the Bunong tribe’s church was a success. All seats in the church were taken, and some people had to stand outside. We were able to bring some young adults from other villages to come and see our program. For the first Aboriginal College Student Bible Study Conference at the Yushan Theological Seminary, we sent letters to the students and called the aboriginal churches to send their students to the conference. In the past, their attendance at the conference had not surpassed 40. The major problem is that these college students have summer jobs to help pay their tuition fee for the next year. Therefore, we reduced the registered fee to US$20 for the four-day conference. As a result, we had 90 college students attend. In the conference, we touched on basic theological issues such as "What is the Bible?" "Why do we go to church on Sunday?" and "Why do we say the Lord’s Prayer?" I firmly believe that they have became more mature Christians through the efforts of this conference. I also believe that without your support and prayers I would not have been able to develop and successfully complete all these programs.

  • The coming events for September through December are the following:
  • Publishing our second newsletter in September
  • Celebration and worship service for the third anniversary of establishing the Hualien Aboriginal Campus Ministry (HACM) in conjunction with new-student welcoming party being held on October 4
  • A two-day fall camp of the HACM at Yushan mountain (11/30 to 12/1)
  • A two-day praise night and worship at the Amis tribe’s church (12/7 to 8)
  • Election of the HACM’s new student committee and Christmas party (12/13)

Please pray for the following:

  • Our upcoming events mentioned above
  • Our new HACM center in Hualien (July 1, 2003)
  • All the students who have graduated and will begin the life of a college student.
  • A full-time worker who can help us reach our goals here in Hualien.
  • Our safety from natural disasters, such as earthquakes (In May 2002, Hualien experienced a earthquake of 6.8 on the Richter scale)
  • Bible study training for aboriginal ministers
  • Improving our Mandarin language skills

By God’s grace and your support, our work is being done to proclaim the good news to the aboriginal people in Taiwan. We are deeply indebted to all of you for your continued support and encouragement. Thank you for being a part of building up the Kingdom of God on earth!

Please continually support us in prayer. May we always be a true blessing to one another!

In His Service,

Yen Hee and Choon Lim
