A letter from Choon and Yen Hee Lim in Taiwan

November 6, 2003

Praise the Lord!

On October 11, 2003, we had a dedication service for our new mission center. For the last three months, we have been preparing for this special event. Now this house has officially become our center. We had a wonderful time of worship and praise with about 200 guests and students for all that the Lord has done. The general secretary of the PCT (Presbytery Church in Taiwan), the Reverend William Ro, delivered the sermon, and several members of the General Assembly office in the PCT also attended. The moderators of the Amis and Taroko tribe presbytery delivered congratulatory messages. Two tribal churches’ choirs sang gospel songs. Of course, our Hualien Aboriginal Student Body, (HASB) which consists of 12 representatives from 6 colleges, performed songs and dances with their respective colleges.

Four years ago, when I began this campus ministry, I didn’t know how and where to start. The language barrier was especially formidable. I kneeled down to God and asked for wisdom and guidance. God truly showed mercy and love to me. This year’s theme for our ministry is “Go forward.” God truly has moved us. We began with no aboriginal college groups on the six college campuses in Hualien. Another example of God’s blessing would be the creation and formation of the HASB.

The campus ministry has even grown so that my residence was no longer sufficient, and a center has been born to hold such functions. Truly, God has moved us to “Go forward.” When God asked Moses to lead the people out of Egypt, he was unwilling to obey the order due to fear and lack of talent, but God showed miracles to Moses and Moses finally obeyed. Since I also saw God’s miracles in our work, I humbly and confidently obeyed God’s order for the aboriginal ministry in Hualien, now and in the future. Thanks for your prayers to let God use Yen Hee and me for expanding the kingdom of God on earth. We thank you for your support so that we could do all the work God has asked. More than ever, we ask your continuing prayer for us, and especially for the new center.

In the main building of our new center we have rooms for an office, a meeting/student studying room, a storage room, a big room for Sunday worship for college students, a “Gospel Coffee House” that is open on Saturdays, a training room for ministers during the week, as well as men’s and women’s restrooms. Besides the main building, we have a student dormitory (for two students) and a student guest room, a kitchen, a shower room, and a restroom.   Buddhist nursing students perform a song during the dedication worship service of our new mission center.

Outside we also have a basketball court, a table tennis area, and a beautiful garden where meetings, barbeque picnics, and other functions can be held. We have now started using all the rooms for all the activities except for the college student worship services that are to be held on Sundays. The HASB is still planning an dedicatory event. It is a big responsibility to start a college church. We need a sound system, music equipment, and a big air-conditioner or two, as well as a pulpit, etc. Besides these items, I need our students’ commitment. I want the HASB to decide whether or not they need a church, because it is going to be their church.

Yen Hee still works at the Mennonite Christian Hospital and at Bethesda, a treatment center for handicapped people. She especially enjoys working with the handicapped children. Last week I took 20 Buddhist Nursing College students to Bethesda. We sang gospel songs and then helped and served them. At the beginning, they were uncomfortable working with the handicapped, but a few minutes later they were happily playing with them. Our teacher’s college student group also will be there to serve them. Because of Yen Hee, our group has begun a program to volunteer at Bethesda. We thank God for giving us a place to put God’s words and actions together.

Now we understand why God put us on this land. Because of your prayers and support, we have truly experienced it. Therefore, we deeply thank you and appreciate your prayers and your support. May the Lord continue to bless you and your families, especially during these coming holidays. May the Incarnation and the peace of Jesus Christ be with you now and always!

Together in Christ’s Love,

Yen Hee and Choon S. Lim
