During our interpretation assignment,
we needed to be cautious when we talked with people. In Taiwan,
we used Mandarin. In the States, we used English, Korean, and
Mandarin. Especially when asked to pray, we had to be careful
not to mix up our languages. During this interpretation assignment,
Choon had a lot of opportunities to preach in English and Korean.
One time, a Taiwanese pastor in Atlanta called and asked Choon
to preach in Mandarin. He hadn’t prepared a sermon in Mandarin
because he thought he would never have a chance to preach in that
language in the States. The congregation in Atlanta has its own
church building with a big parking lot. Their membership is more
than 150. Choon preached in English at the first service and in
Mandarin at the second service. We had good fellowship with them.
We thank God that many Taiwanese come to America and worship God.
On December 14, 2004, Choon went back to Hualien to celebrate
Christmas with the students and to participate in the election
for HACM (Hualien Aboriginal Campus Ministry) officers. He wondered
how they were doing without his leadership and how they prepared
for the Christmas programs. He was surprised to see so many students
at the Christmas party and Sunday worship service. There wasn’t
enough room for the students in our new center, so we removed
all the chairs and sat on the floor and praised and worshiped
God. Choon was filled with joy and thanked God for His grace and
love.
Choon knows how hard it is to bring college students to Sunday
service and activities. Only 3 percent of the population in Taiwan
is Christian. Choon’s prayer is that these college students
become Christians and lead Christianity in Taiwan. For him, they
are very precious ones and the hope of Christianity. In Taiwan
it is very hard to reach out to older people. Their hearts are
closed to Christianity, but open to folk religious beliefs such
as worshiping their ancestors. But the college students still
have a chance. They want to seek and learn something. Here is
our opportunity to let them come to our programs and activities
and know and learn about Jesus Christ and, hopefully, become Christians.
That is why Choon is very excited when he sees a lot of students
participate in our programs. So far, we have been so blessed to
be used by God in this way. Therefore, Choon is so grateful to
God for it all.
Truly, without your support and prayers, we couldn’t do
what we have done in Hualien. As we begin our third term, we humbly
ask you to continue to support us so that more people in Taiwan
can believe and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
May you experience the fullness of God’s grace, love, and
peace during this Lent and Easter! Hallelujah!
