Dear Friends in mission,
Easter greetings to you!
A great thing has happened in our college ministry on this Easter
Day. One of the Buddhist Nursing College Students, Lee Rui –Wye,
accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Two years ago, we
mentioned her in our mission report to you. At that time, her
parents threatened to not pay her tuition if she continued to
participate in our Christian activities. So she didn’t join
our activities for a while. Later, she decided to continue to
participate. I encouraged her to do well in school, since this
is important to her parents. I helped her with English. She won
first prize in the Spoken English Contest in her school last year
and this year, then she represented the Buddhist Nursing College
in the National College Spoken English Contest. Because of her
good grades in school and her success in the contest, her parents
continued sending her support for tuition and living expenses.

On the day of her baptism, I cried joyfully while
saying, “Rui Wye, I baptize you in the name of God the Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit.” What an honor to be God’s servant,
God’s instrument! I truly thank God that the Holy Spirit strengthens,
comforts, and guides her. Please pray for her continually. As a
Christian in Taiwan, she has to face many problems with her family,
relatives, and her non-Christian friends. |

Only 3 percent of the population
in Taiwan is Christian. Her parents worry about her not worshiping
their ancestors and even themselves after their death. Her baptism
was the most exciting day of my ministry in Taiwan. Of course, because
you have supported us, you helped this to happen. Thanks for your
prayers and support.
On Saturday, April 22, we had our annual volleyball and basketball
tournament at the Buddhist Nursing College. The tournament is held
at a different school every year. This is our fifth tournament,
and all the schools participated. We had the highest number of students
participating. But it was too hot, so all had sunburned faces after
the game. To be good instruments for Jesus Christ, we have to be
well-equipped physically as well as spiritually. |

Last Saturday, we took 13 students
to Tai-Dong for our biannual event, Praise Night. It took about
three hours by car from our mission center. I was very anxious to
see the church, Run-Tien Presbyterian Church, because of our previous
encounter with Faith Bradley. Last year, when we were doing our
interpretation assignment at the Resurrection Presbyterian Church
in Atlanta, we met an elder of the church who was a former PC(USA)
missionary to Taiwan, south of Hualien, 50 years ago. She invited
us to her home to talk about her work as a nurse and about her late
husband, the Rev. Brake Bradley, and his ministry. She showed us
many pictures. That’s when I saw pictures of the Run-Tien
Presbyterian Church. The top of the church has a cross atop a globe. |

After our visit with Faith, she
came to Taiwan with her son, a PC(USA) minister. Due to a typhoon,
they were only able to come to Hualien for one day and didn’t
get to see the church. So this year we planned to go to the church
for our Praise Night event. As soon as we got into the village,
we saw the church’s cross sitting on top of the globe. A
young pastor greeted us and showed us around. Inside and out,
it looked the same as it did in the pictures.
During my sermon, I mentioned the Bradleys. After the event,
a man waited for me so he could tell me that he had been Rev.
Bradley’s helper. He gave me a picture of his family. He
is a deacon of the church and his daughter is a Sunday school
teacher and a nurse at a local hospital. He thanked me for what
the Bradleys had done for his family and church.

Many rural churches in Taiwan have few young people, but when we
bring our gospel praise group the church fills with youth. |
|
On Praise Night, six local churches got together
and praised God. In the churches in the countryside, there aren’t
many youth. But when we go to churches with the college praise team,
many middle and high school students come and praise God. This time,
the church was packed with youth, as we presented drama, testimony,
and a sermon, and gave them the challenge to love God and love their
neighbor. |

A lot of people don’t see
the behind-the-scenes preparation for such an event. The work
is tiring, and there are always problems. I often say, “This
is it, no more.” But when I see teenagers’ eyes during
our event, I change my mind saying, “Let’s do again.”
My philosophy is: if we don’t do anything, there is no problem,
but when we do something, there is always problem. Therefore,
we do not worry about having problems. Instead, we overcome the
problems with God’s help and God’s power. So we need
your prayers for overcoming all the difficulties and problems.
Thanks for your faithful prayers and support. We see the fruits
of the mission work. I truly believe that God will say “you
are a good servant and have done well” for your part in
sending us to serve people in Hualien, Taiwan.
