A letter from Jim and Kathy Long in Kenya

October 2002

A Big Jambo to All of You—Our Friends, Family & Prayer Partners:

Surely you must have been praying for the Longs, as we have surely needed your prayers. It is always hard to be separated from your children but when one of them is going through a tough time—it is doubly hard. We want to thank you for your prayers on our behalf as we trust the Lord to bring "joy in the morning."

Things in the ministry here at the Rift Valley Academy (RVA) are going well. We have just finished a very wonderful "Spiritual Emphasis Week," where many decisions were made by our students to recommit their lives to Jesus. We also had some accept Jesus for the first time. We are praising the Lord for working in our midst.

We thank the Lord for His provision once again for the needed staff. We have had an extra joy this year in that Nathan Swartzendruber from First Presbyterian Church, Kokomo, Indiana, has joined us for the first term to teach American literature to our 11th graders. He has also been leading in worship for our Spiritual Emphasis Week.

Also, we rejoice as the Lord has answered prayer on behalf of one of the men in the local community. David, who worked at RVA and had an alcohol problem, has accepted the Lord and has not touched alcohol for five months. For several years I have prayed with his wife that he would find His way "home" to the Lord and, praise the Lord, he has! We are rejoicing that God can do what no man can do and that is change the hearts of men and women. We know we have a God that hears and answers prayers.

In a couple of months we will know who the RVA school board has chosen to be the next superintendent of Rift Valley Academy. As we shared in our last prayer letter, Jim felt that God is releasing us from ministry here at RVA. Once the next Superintendent is appointed, we will most likely remain here at RVA for one more school term. We are looking to return to the States by June of next year.

We ask your prayers that the Lord would clearly show us the next step He has for our lives. We do have many joys to share with you as God has blessed us with four grandchildren and three more on the way! By the time we arrive back in the States to stay, we will be proud grandparents of seven grandchildren!

Last April Jim celebrated his 58th birthday and attached is a picture of him celebrating with our son Zachary, who was visiting with us, and three of our dearest African friends, Mugo, Nahashon, and Elizabeth.

We want to thank you for standing with us and ask that you would continue to pray and stand with us in this next year as we desire to walk in a manner that is worthy of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Please pray for the country of Kenya as we face elections for a new president. Things are uncertain at this point—we need your prayers for a peaceful election and transition in power here. Kenya is also experiencing a nationwide teachers strike and Kenya students’ education opportunities are on hold for now.

We are grateful that we know that the Father in heaven is involved here on this earth and that He desires to be even more involved through our prayers and lives. We pray that you will experience Him in a new way in the coming months. Please be assured that we are praying for our own country—that the Lord would give wisdom to President Bush and other world leaders. We are grateful that this world is not our home and that we do have a hope and a future because heaven is our final destination. We want to make the most of the time God gives us here on this earth. God bless you with His peace and presence each day as you serve Him where He has planted you. We love you and thank God for you!

Serving together in His vineyard,

Jim and Kathy Long
