A letter from Sue Makin in Malawi

March 15, 2004

Dear Friends,

There are so many sad and concerning news stories out of Africa and Malawi.
Here is a story with a happy ending that I would like to share with you. Yesterday at Mulanje Mission Hospital, a Presbyterian mission hospital belonging to Blantyre Synod, Church of Central Africa Presbyterian, we said goodbye to three very happy patients.

Dr. Sue Makin with Estery White, Agnes Kamoto, and Lydia Maxwell. Thanks to successful fistula operations the quality of their lives has been vastly improved.
The lives of Estery White, Agnes Kamoto, and Lydia Maxwell have been changed in a positive direction due to three successful fistula operations that were done at our hospital. Each of them has a sad story to tell of long and difficult labors, births of stillborn babies, social isolation, and despair. They were leaking urine all the time from injuries to their bladders from prolonged childbirth. One of these three women came to the hospital alone, which is highly unusual in Malawi, because she had no friend or relative to come with her.

We are delighted that we can offer the operations and the post-op care to these women who have little or no financial resources due to generous donations from Christian friends in the United States. Rejoice with us that God is working through our lives in southern Africa.

Sincerely yours,

Sue Makin
