  A letter from Gretchen & Tom Reynolds in China

May 1, 2006

Dear Friends,

Teaching is a great job. I learn so much as I teach my students here in China. I’ve been teaching Literature this year. In the past few months I’ve watched Hollywood’s rendition of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice (with Al Pacino) about seven times. My favorite part is when Portia gives a description of mercy:

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy.
(Act 4, Scene 1)

Last year our teachers college installed a high tech listening lab room where students can watch movies such as The Merchant of Venice with their own individual computer monitors.

  This theme of mercy, grace, and forgiveness has been following me for a while now. The last time that I was home, I found Philip Yancey’s book What’s So Amazing About Grace? on the public library shelves. After reading this book, I felt encouraged to show more grace to those around me, especially my students. This semester I’ve been learning to let go of some of my strictness as a teacher for the sake of grace. I’m thankful for God’s grace and for this chance to learn and grow with my students in China.

Grace and Peace,

Gretchen Reynolds
