A letter from Emily Schornstein in Egypt

March 2003

Dear Family and Friends,

The first Sunday after the war started (March 23), our Scripture in the worship service was from Micah, “they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” Then we read from Ephesians 2: “ So [Christ] came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.” And from the Gospel of John, 15, we read, “love one another as I have loved you.” We prayed for ourselves and for our enemies. It was a powerful service, reminding us just how far we have strayed from the way of life Jesus taught us when he was on earth.

Today I picked up “Our Daily Bread” and read Psalm 25. I was reminded that David waited for God’s time to get rid of Saul. Oh, how I wish our country could have listened to these messages.

I’m sure the slant on the news that we receive here in Egypt is different from what you hear. The Egyptian ex-pats who were working in Iraq and Kuwait are returning to Egypt and cannot find jobs to support their families as they have been doing. Tourism is almost non-existent, meaning many people have lost their jobs. The economy is suffering and the Egyptian pound continues to lose value. These people need to know that we see them as our brothers and sisters, and that we are all God’s people. They need to see beyond the fact that we are Americans, and see God’s love through our actions. Please pray that in their current suffering they do not loose their faith, whether it is Muslim or Christian.

A friend, the Reverend Betty Jean Bailey, wrote the following, which we must also remember:

My friends and acquaintances in Jerusalem and the West Bank have shared their great concerns about what Israel will do under the cover of war news. They expect the killing of Palestinians to be stepped up; they expect prolonged curfew with little food and water; they expect no access to medical care; they expect the ethnic cleansing called "transfer"; they expect internationals to be forced out so there is no one to observe; they expect an increase in home demolitions.

It is so apparent that all people in the Middle Eastern countries need a miracle. God loves us and he does hear our prayers. We must intercede for these people who endure more suffering than we can ever know.

My two years as a volunteer have gone quickly, and I will be going to the States for a furlough the middle of May. I hope to see/meet many of you during that time. When I return in August, I will take on new responsibilities of helping to develop a geriatric wing in the Synod of the Nile’s hospital, the Cairo Evangelical Medical Center, in downtown Cairo. The staff and patients will be both Egyptian Muslim and Christian from all walks of life, and also Sudanese refugees. The Cairo Geriatric Center, where I now work, serves and is staffed by Christians, and the residents are self-pay, so I will be having a different experience. We are a model nursing home, and I hope we can develop another model in this country.

I will lose my “cgs” email address when I leave the Cairo Geriatric Center, so please write me at this email address: eschorns@bellsouth.net

Blessings to you all.

Emily Schornstein
