A letter from Billy and Vickie See in China

October 8, 2003

Dear Friends,

When our plane touched down in Shanghai on August 15, Vickie and I looked at each other and said, “We’re in China!” A phrase we would repeat occasionally over the next several days, a bit amazed that after more than a year of praying, deciding, applying, waiting, interviewing, waiting, training, and moving, we actually made it to China. After a month and a half, I still get the feeling sometimes that I may wake up and it all will be a dream.

We were in Cincinnati on vacation when we had the discussion and made the decision as a couple to look for an opportunity to serve. Both of us had felt a call to do something in the way of Christian service. But how? The next week we met with our pastor, Clay Stevens at Springfield Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Kentucky. We talked to him about our decision and he showed us the PC(USA) mission service Web site. There it was! “English as mission.” With a little training, we could do that. Vickie had already registered to begin working on a master’s program in education. I enrolled part-time at Kentucky State University and started taking education courses and Spanish. We thought initially that the opportunity would be with Spanish speakers.
Vickie with Chao Shuai, or "Chasy." She is a senior in the English department and the Sees’ Chinese-language tutor and friend.

We got the application to Mission Service Recruitment completed just under the deadline. Then we waited. And waited. Then a phone call came. As we learned more, we realized the opportunity would be in China. China? We talked about it, prayed about it, and, yes, China. If they would take us, we would go to China. We went to the mission service recruitment office in Louisville for interviews. They would submit our names to Church World Service. In a week or so, we got the word, Church World Service had accepted us. We were going to China to be English teachers in a program of the Amity Foundation, a Chinese Christian organization.

It was a very nice and friendly evening with some of Vickie's students.

Our assignment at Fuyang Teachers College is in Anhui province. This semester we both are teaching classes in English conversation. Most of our students will become English teachers. We try to spend as much time as we can talking with students. The people of the college, the city, and the church have all been very friendly.

There is only one church in town; it is packed every Sunday. We understand little that is said, but it feels good to be there with other Christians on Sunday morning. We have met a couple of Christian students from our school who attend there. We are looking forward to their friendship.

Continue to pray for us and that we will find appropriate ways to share our faith.

In Christian Love,

Billy and Vickie See
