A letter from Billy and Vickie See in China

November 2, 2003

Ni hao,

It is hard to believe, but Billy and I have been in China for over two months now. Time is going by for us so fast.

Our Chinese lessons are coming along. Our teacher, Cao Shuai (“Chasy”) has been a blessing from the Lord. When she enters the classroom as a new teacher, her students will be very fortunate. She is a very diligent and concise teacher, yet very patient and kind in her guidance as we study our new language. Her greatest gift to us comes when we go to church. Cao Shuai and another student, Li Xiu Ying (“Lacy”), sit on either side of Billy and me so that they can translate the Scripture references for us. This simple act allows Billy and me to be able to read the pastor’s scripture. Recently, Cao Shuai has been translating the church members questions to us so that they can get to know us better. This is good for Billy and me because it slowly removes much of the mystique from the “foreigners.”

With the Thanksgiving season approaching, it is a time of reflection on blessings given to us by the Lord. Since coming to China in August, our blessings have been numerous. We are thankful for international calling and the Internet. Recently, Billy and I called our parents and our sons and daughters-in-law. Even though we are in contact with them daily through email, it was wonderful to hear their loving voices.

Our families are all doing well, and this gives Billy and me peace of mind when thinking of our loved ones. Our parents are enjoying their great-grandchildren as a new generation of family playfully grows. Our sons and daughters-in-law are working and studying hard in school. Billy and I have settled into our Chinese routine and life is very good for us. For all the Lord has given to us, we are truly thankful.

Last Sunday, the preacher preached on “Manna from God.” It brought to my mind how often I grumble and complain about what I want, not just need. While I have been in China for only two months, the Lord has provided me “manna and quail” at every turn. He has provided me with people that translate for me so that my needs are being met while I learn Chinese. He has provided me Christian acquaintances that show me how weak my faith is compared to their faith. He has provided me with a family that supports me, even though they would prefer me to be much closer to home. But He has also provided me a help-mate, a companion, and a best friend in Billy. Together, we are thankful for this faith journey the Lord has provided for us.

Continue to pray that God’s plan for our lives will be revealed to us and that we will be able to recognize and follow His will. Pray that we will be able share our faith to those around us in a way that their hearts can be cultivated and prepared for the truth. And please, continue to pray for our families and friends at home.

Billy and I are thankful to have your prayers and thoughts with us.

From Fuyang City, Anhui Province, Peoples Republic of China,

Happy Thanksgiving,

Vickie See
