Dear Friends,
It’s a rainy and cloudy day, and we’re thankful, since
the dry season is supposed to begin this month. Our electricity
and water have been working more often now, so we’re also
thankful for that. God is teaching us to trust and be thankful—isn’t
that what He’s always teaching us?
Family news
Evangeline has decided to be a voice performance major in college.
She has done two solos lately at the church and the school. We’re
glad, because she does have a nice voice. Her school options are
Gordon College, in Hamilton, Massachusetts, and maybe one in California.
Of course, all our kids love California, so that’s a big
pull.
Theo and Sarah are doing very well in school, so the Lord has
answered prayer for that.
Walt and I are enjoying the teaching more and more at the seminary,
but of course, Walt’s is more difficult. (By the way, we
celebrated 30 years of marriage on May 1!) We have discussed not
taking French (our teacher comes to the house) because it takes
such a huge chunk of time out of our week, (two hours on two days
a week), but we have not come to a decision. The teacher does
not use a curriculum, except for an elementary French schoolbook
made for the Congo, which is good, but sometimes he gets to talking
about history (he and Walt grew up in the same area) or about
government issues. If he talks in French, I get lost, but if he
talks in English, then there’s no effort on either of our
parts! It takes a lot of self-discipline to study on our own,
but I think it would be harder to do if we didn’t have a
teacher. You could pray for wisdom on this.
We are very much looking forward to flying to the States, on
May 4 and 5, to see our family, and especially for Jim’s
commissioning and graduation. The three kids here cannot go because
of school, and they have a nice Christian single teacher staying
with them. Please pray for safety for them (Kinshasa is still
unstable politically because of elections coming up in July),
and for us. We will return on the 19th.
Love and thanksgiving to all for your prayers,
Val and Walt
