Cedepca Newsletter
Dear Friends of Cedepca:
Time for another update from our little corner of the planet!
Ivone Gebara in Guatemala
Unlike the sultry North when August is a season of vacations
and reduced programs, Cedepca is going full steam ahead. One of
Cedepca’s trademarks is bringing world-class theologians
to our region to share their cutting-edge reflections with our
constituencies. For example, our Womens Program forms part of
the Nucleus of Women and Theology here in Guatemala. From September
1-3 we will co-sponsor the VIII Sessions on Women and Theology
with the Brazilian feminist theologian Dr. Ivone Gebara. She will
speak on Finding Ourselves in the God of Life.
Who Would Jesus Assassinate?
Cedepca was also poised to respond to Pat Robertsons recent call
for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez
on his 700 Club TV program. Dennis Smith, our Coordinator of Communication
Training and Publications, was invited to participate in an hour-long
pastoral forum on Radio Cultural, Guatemala’s most respected
evangelical radio station the evening of August 25. (Thanks to
Sojourners for the great headline!)All three panelists on the
forum repudiated Robertson’s outburst and called on Guatemalan
Christians to reflect seriously on how the Prince of Peace can
calm the violence that continues to linger within our society
and our individual selves.
Finally, an accounting
Thank you for your patience! After a harrowing exercise in forensic
accounting to reconstruct stolen financial records, we now have
a financial report for 2004. Let us know if you need a copy. We
also have a complete list of your generous donations that have
permitted us to replace stolen computers and to beef up our security
here at the office.
In Christ,
Judith Castañeda
General Coordinator, Cedepca
