Letter from Dave and Sue Thomas on the U.S.-Mexico border

December 2001

Dear Friends

¡FELIZ NAVIDAD! from the Thomas family … (you´ll notice that the first letters of each capitalized word spell MERRY CHRISTMAS).

MÉXICO. Where we are now serving as mission workers with Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in partnership with the National Presbyterian Church of México.

EDUCATION. Jennifer is now a junior at Patagonia High School, 17 miles from our home, with only about 100 students in the entire school.

RELATIONSHIPS. One of the primary goals of our program, Compañeros en Misión (Partners in Mission), building bridges of understanding between the U.S. and México.

RUTAS. The city buses that we took to get around in Cuernavaca, México, while we were living there from March to September.

YOU. Someone we would like to hear from soon via telephone, snail mail or e-mail: phone: 520-287-9741; snail mail address: 3 West Sagebrush Rd., Nogales, AZ 85621; email: Thomas3@theriver.com, MacDaveT@excite.com, sonorasue@excite.com, Sunflower_jen22@hotmail.com

CUERNAVACA, México. Where we lived for six months with Señora Judith Pérez de León and Sofía while our family attended Cuauhnáhuac Spanish Language Institute.

HEALTH programs. Something we are hoping to begin at our five mission sites in México, as soon as funds become available.

RUINS of pyramids we visited while living in México included: Teotihuacán, Xochicalco, Teopanzolco, Monte Alban, Tepoztlán and Templo Mayor.

INVITED? Yes, you! To come to the border and be a part of this exciting mission in the state of Sonora, México.

SONORA. The second-largest state in México, where our mission program has five churches—in the cities of Nogales, Hermosillo, Caborca, Guaymas and Navojoa.

TORTILLAS. We’ve eaten them for years; now we know how to make them, thanks to our Mexican friends in Cuernavaca.

MISSION teams. The groups that we coordinate and accompany on their trips to Sonora for cultural awareness and construction projects.

ARIZONA. Where we are living while working with Compañeros en Misión (also home to the World Champion Diamondbacks baseball team).

SHARING. What we help people on both sides of the border to do in the process of a short-term mission trip, as we all become "partners in mission."

Since the September 11 events, many people in the U.S. are feeling renewed patriotism and spirituality. Alan Jackson, one of our favorite country music singers, recently wrote this song about the tragedy:

"I’m just a singer of simple songs; I’m not a real political man. I watch CNN but I’m not sure I can tell you the difference in Iraq and Iran. But I know Jesus and I talk to God, and I remember from when I was young … faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us … and the greatest is love."
