Letter from Nathaniel Veltman in Ethiopia

August 18, 2009

Dear Friends,

An update on my part is way overdue, and now is a good time. I finished the first two (of six) phases of language school two weeks ago. I decided that would be the end of language school since once they begin classes again I will be on this trip and will be moving to Metu afterward. Of course, my language training never stops, as I use Amharic everyday with taxis and at restaurants.

Tomorrow I fly out to Gambella for the beginning of a two-week trip through the five synods I work with. This trip is very similar to the trip I took in February to get acquainted with Ethiopia and my position. This time, having had several months to adjust, I’ll be able to observe better and remember more names.

My itinerary is:

August 19-22: Gambella
August 22-25: Dembi Dollo
August 25-28: Metu
August 28: Mizan
August 29 - 31: Tuliget
August 31 - September 3: Mizan
September 3 travel to Jimma/ Flight to Addis Ababa.

After this trip, another trip to Kenya may be required. We will determine if such a trip is needed when visiting Gambella and Metu. If a trip is required, I will likely visit some place other than Nairobi (perhaps Mombasa) to see another part of Kenya, but we will see. After that, I will move to Metu permanently. The logistical details still need to be worked out, but I hope that will be addressed while I am visiting in Metu.

On my trip to Metu two weeks ago I visited my future house and explored the community. I am excited to be living there. Metu is much smaller than Addis, meaning less crowded and fewer vehicles (and pollution). The immediate community around my house/compound is also a source of excitement for me as many of my neighbors are Mekane Yesus church members whom I will likely be joining for weekly worship.

Well, this update is brief, but know that I am doing well. Please pray for safe travels and a good learning experience.

I hope all is well with you.

Shalom,

Than
