A letter from Don and Martha Wehmeyer in Mexico

November 29, 2004

Christmas greetings from Yucata, Mexico

There has never been a snowflake in Yucatan but that will not stop the stores from putting up plastic snowmen with carrot noses and playing “White Christmas” on the public announcement system! Thankfully, the church here is quite determined not to let sales gimmicks into their liturgy so there are no cut-outs of Santa Claus drinking Coke in the sanctuaries. But they will have nice services on the 24th and the 25th. We introduced the Advent wreath and Christmas Eve candlelight services a number of years ago, and these are now quite popular. When you worship this Christmas remember your brothers and sisters around the world are worshiping our Lord and Saviour with you.

Each of our children is healthy and sharing the gospel among his or her friends. I continue to teach at the San Pablo Seminary and have many conferences lined up for the next few months. More and more interest is being shown in some of the liturgical reforms we have been trying to present, and this is greatly encouraging to me. The Benedictine religious community for women has completed three years, and we are praying that we will have six novices living at Gethsemane for the coming year. (They will not make their decisions until December 10, after this letter is mailed.) Martha was elected as a board member of the Door of Salvation congregation where she has been a member for many years. This is a great challenge, as the congregation has had poor leadership for a number of years and the members have drifted away to other places.

Mr. and Mrs. Itzim are a Tzeltal couple in Chiapas and members of the Presbyterian Church of Tenejapa, where Don taught a course recently.
Our prayers for 2005 are focused on consolidating what has been begun at Gethsemane and wisdom of how to proceed with a community for men. The mission work teams going to Gethsemane will be working on a dining hall for the guests who stay at the retreat centre. We are starting with zero funds so if you are thinking about Christmas gifts, that might be a nice one to send with Santa on his sled. In January I am looking forward to the arrival of an administrator for the magazine Superacion Ministerial that we have published from time to time. The magazine has been quite popular but I have not been able to keep up with all the details of the editorial and printing processes, so having a person for that will be a big help.

In July I was elected as Minister of Education of our presbytery. This is one of four ministries and has a great deal of responsibility for leadership development. We were able to put together a plan to renovate the thinking about the three clerical orders (often called “offices” by Presbyterians, but they were orders for John Calvin): pastor, elder, and deacon. The ministry of one order often becomes confused with another and this causes disruptions in the local churches. The role of the deaconate especially has been virtually lost and this is a great weakness in the outreach of the church to the neediest.

Please help us pray for a retreat on spirituality and missions that is being organized for PC(USA) pastors by the Outreach Foundation. The week-long retreat will be in the spring at Gethsemane and in Chiapas.

May His love fill you this Christmas season.

Don and Martha Wehmeyer
