  Al and Ellen Smith -
2007 - Page 1

Photo of 8 young men sitting on a carpet on the floor all paying attention to someone or something on their right.   the Roma Network sponsored an evangelization meeting in the city of Michurinsk in December 2006. We were encouraged by how many men, and particularly young men, came. In Roma culture, the men and women often sit separately. Photo by Piotr Romme.

Photo of two people holding a red flag while a third person looks on from behind. The flag has a prominent cross and letters from the Cyrillic alphabet.   Piotr and Olga Romme (holding flag) in March 2006 with Rustam, a young Roma Christian, displaying the Russian Roma flag.   Photo of Al Smith sitting on a carpet at a table with short legs. Eight other people are sitting with him at the table, which is laden with food. Carpets are hanging from the walls of the room.   In July 2006, Al traveled with Piotr Romme to get to know the Roma Network. Here they are visiting a Roma family near Sherbekino, where a Russian pastor to the church there (fifth from the right) ministers to the Roma community.

Photo of Al Smith sitting with another man on the seat of a horse-drawn cart while the horse, harnessed to the cart, stands ready.   Al and Pastor Andrei (a Roma pastor in the Kursk region), take a wild ride in this cart. The Roma are still drawn to horses and often ask us if Roma in America have horses. A horse is a sign of prosperity for the Roma.
