Rodney and Sharyn Babe are mission co-workers appointed to service in Haiti. They have served in Haiti since 1987, first with Project HELP and since 1991 with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). By invitation of the Episcopal Church of Haiti, Rodney serves as advisor to the Agricultural Development Program of the Comprehensive Development Project (CODEP), formerly known as Cormiers Development Project. Sharyn is an educational advisor for CODEP.

The Cormiers project is sponsored under a longstanding covenant between the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Episcopal Church of Haiti. Initiated in 1989, the ambitious ten-year project is designed to improve the lives of the residents of Cormiers through long-term education, health, and agricultural development programs. Residents are directly involved in all aspects of organization and management, and receive training and support in planning and executing the various programs.

The twelve-square mile project area encompasses the severely deforested and eroding watershed and upper valley of the Cormiers River. The chief occupation of the 4,500 residents is subsistence and cash-crop farming. Rodney is an agriculturalist with the project and assists communities with reforestation and farming activities. Sharyn is an educational advisor assisting in teacher training and formation of rural teachers and students at CODEP-affiliated schools. Prior to this she was a guidance counselor at Quisqueya Christian School.

A native of Pennsylvania, Sharyn earned her B.A. in fine arts and an M.Ed. in counseling from Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania. From 1983 to 1986 she was the coordinator of the Job Training Partnership Act programs for youth and adult literacy in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Prior to leaving for Haiti in 1987, she worked for the Juniata Valley school district as an elementary guidance counselor.

Born in Pennsylvania, Rodney earned his B.S. degree in agriculture and dairy husbandry from Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. For more than a decade the Babes, in partnership with Rodney's parents and brother, operated a farm in central Pennsylvania with about 1,000 tillable acres and 150 dairy cows. Beef, hogs, and cash crops supplemented the dairy. During this time they joined the Sinking Valley Presbyterian Church in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, where they are still members. In 1986 Rodney earned his Master of Religious Education degree from Manahath School of Theology in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, a seminary of the Evangelical Methodist Church. A year later he became director of Project HELP for the Churches of God of Haiti.

Sharyn and Rodney are the parents of two adult daughters, Shelly and Debbie.
