| Bethany works closely with her
counterpart, the Rev. Mendelson Dávila, a Pentecostal pastor
from Nicaragua who serves as program coordinator for Central America
and Mexico. With him, she facilitates a three-week orientation
program for all the volunteers, focusing on community building,
shared worship, biblical reflection, and cross-cultural education.
At the end of the ten-month term of service, Bethany and Mendelson
hold a closing retreat for all the program participants.
Speaking of her call to service, Bethany points to her participation
in a disaster relief relief team to Nicaragua in March 1999: “It
was one of the best experiences of my life. I slept on floors,
took cold showers, and was witnessed to by some of the kindest
people I have ever met in my life. They had so little and yet
they gave so much. I knew the Lord was calling me to a new path
in life.”
Even though Bethany did not speak Spanish, this experience inspired
her to apply to the Reconcilliation and Mission Exchange Program
in 2002. She was selected as a participant and served in Costa
Rica for 10 months. After returning from her term of service in
Costa Rica, she accepted an appointment as the U.S. program coordinator
of the Reconciliation and Mission Exchange program.
Bethany has a bachelor of arts in history from Schreiner University
in Kerrville, Texas. She was director of student activities at
Schreiner from 2000 to 2002.
