Since February 1998 Cynthia has been teaching Christian education,
church administration and English at Amboniavaratra Theological
College of the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar (FJKM), the
PC(USA)s partner denomination in Madagascar. Cynthia also
teaches at the Lutheran Graduate Seminary of the Malagasy Lutheran
Church where her husband, Mark Rich, also teaches. Mark is appointed
by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). Both seminaries
are situated in Fianarantsoa, in the beautiful highlands of Madagascar,
a large island off the southeast coast of Africa.
Amboniavaratra Theological College is a college-level institution
that prepares future pastors. Students at the Lutheran Graduate
Seminary, on the other hand, are experienced pastors who have
been chosen for leadership by their church. There, Cynthia teaches
practical theology courses (ministry), including Christian education,
preaching, church, church administration, and faith development.
Cynthia and Mark feel blessed to have the opportunity to live
and work in such a diverse and rich environment. Cynthia says:
"We have been accepted graciously by both partner churches
with whom we work and our students have responded well to our
teaching. Our family has been strengthened and given gifts beyond
imagining through this experience. We are grateful for this opportunity
for service."
