Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
140 Novosaratovka

RUSSIA
Email: Joe and Hannah Kang

Joe and Hannah Kang have been serving in Russia since 2000. They are seconded to the theological seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia and Other States (ELCROS). Joe teaches Old Testament theology and the theology of the fourth Gospel. Hannah's services as librarian are not needed, so she is studying Russian and doing ministry through the home. The Kangs first assignment in Russia was at the Moscow Presbyterian Theological Academy. Joe taught New Testament and Hannah was the librarian. Both their work at the Presbyterian seminary in Moscow and with the ELCROS seminary in St. Petersburg are at the request of the partnership between the PC(USA), the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia and Other States (ELCROS).

Prior to their assignment to Russia, the Kangs served as PC(USA) mission co-workers at Zomba Theological College in Malawi from January 1991 to April 2000.

Originally from Korea, Joe earned his bachelor's degree in theology from Hankuk Theological Seminary, now a part of Hanshin University in Seoul. He holds graduate degrees from Hankuk and San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, California. He served as chaplain of Keisung High School in Taegu, Korea, and as pastor of First Korean Presbyterian Church of Virginia in Annandale and the Washington Youngnak Presbyterian Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. He is a minister member of National Capital Presbytery.

Hannah, also a native of Korea, earned her bachelor of theology degree from Hankuk Theological Seminary. In addition, she has a license for teaching high school English in Korea. Mrs. Kang attended San Francisco Theological Seminary. She has worked in various positions—English teacher, pastor's wife, mother, and librarian.
