Jim and Kathy Long have been appointed by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to serve as mission specialists in Kenya at the Rift Valley Academy (RVA) in Kijabe. Their appointment is jointly supported by Worldwide Ministries Division; First Presbyterian Church of Kokomo, Indiana; and other supporting individuals and congregations. The Longs have been requested by the African Inland Mission (AIM) for Jim to serve as principal and Kathy to serve as administrative assistant.

Rift Valley Academy was established in 1908 for the purpose of educating and caring for the children of mission workers in Africa. Currently about 500 children whose parents are from various denominations and are serving throughout the continent of Africa attend RVA. The Longs have served at RVA several times before at the invitation of AIM. They first spent three years at RVA from 1977 to 1979. Jim taught Bible and earth science. From 1982 to 1985 Jim was a guidance counselor and Kathy was the office manager at RVA, and from 1986 to 1989 Jim was the assistant principal and Kathy again served as office manager.
