Rebecca Montgomery has served since July 2002 as an English teacher
in the city of Jiu Jiang in Jiang Xi province. Her assignment
with the Amity Foundation, a Chinese non-government organization
started by the initiative of Chinese Christians, gives her the
chance to live and work among the people of China by their own
invitation. One of Amity’s ministries is to send native
English speakers to teach in schools that would not otherwise
be able to afford them, thus making optimal use of personnel.
In particular Amity targets teachers colleges so that the benefit
of native English speaking teachers can be multiplied exponentially
when graduated students then in turn become teachers.
Rebecca teaches spoken English to first- and second-year English
majors. She is also one of the managers of the foreign language
department’s resource room and regularly attends the college’s
“English Corner,” giving her students the chance to
practice their English as much as possible. One evening a week
she offers a beginning English class at her local church.
