Edgar says, "I have great expectations for my work in Spain:
sharing in the life of the Evangelical Church of Spain and learning
from their experience as a minority church in a Roman Catholic
country as well as sharing my own experience in Latin America
with that sister church, and sharing my training and life formation
in the Venezuelan church with the seminary community and the church
at large. I am interested in studying the common roots which could
help me to better understand my own culture. In spite of the negative
aspects of Spanish colonization, there are great values to be
lifted up in our commonality of language and cultural values."
Edgar brings a great deal of insight and experience to his new
position in Spain. For the past twenty-seven years he has been
a professor of philosophy at the Universidad de Los Andes in Merida,
Venezuela. From 19661972 he was a pastor in the Presbytery
of Venezuela and for the past fourteen years he has been a pastor
in the Western Presbytery, Iglesia Presbiteriana de Venezuela.
Edgar has held administrative positions at both the presbytery
and synod levels. He received his BS degree in biology from Maryville
College in Maryville, Tennessee, and his MDiv and ThM from Princeton
Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. Edgar received
his "Licenciatura" in philosophy from Universidad del
Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela, and a PhD in philosophy from Vanderbilt
University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Donna continues her work in theological education "at a
distance." This is a new model of theological education emerging
in Latin America and Africa where the construction of new seminaries
would be quite costly. "At a distance" is akin to an
extension program where the teachers travel to the students. There
are also learning centers throughout the region. Donna is particularly
excited about this model of theological education because it provides
lay leadership training at a very low cost and empowers small
churches into new discipleship patterns. This model of education
especially helps women fulfill their vocation.
Prior to her new position in Spain, Donna served as a PC(USA)
missionary in theological and Christian education in Barranquilla,
Colombia, and Merida,Venezuela. She served churches in Dover,
Mountainside, and Elizabeth, New Jersey, and has worked as a bilingual
editor for the United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville,
Tennessee. Donna also served as executive director of the East
Nashville Cooperative Ministry in Nashville. She earned her BA
degree in applied music as a voice major at Maryville College
in Maryville, Tennessee, and her MDiv from Princeton Theological
Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. Later Donna went back to school
and received her MEd degree in music education from Tennessee
State University and her DMin degree in church history from Vanderbilt
Divinity School.
Donna is a clergy member of Middle Tennessee Presbytery and Edgar
is a clergy member of Presbiterio Occidental de Venezuela. Donna
and Edgar have three adult children, Matilde, Edgar, and Donna,
as well as five grandchildren.
