"The one thing that really sparked my interest in mission
work was my participation in short mission trips with my church
as a teenager," Marty says. "I participated in several
of these trips, doing evangelistic activities with children, repair
work on homes, and other kinds of service projects in Jesus
name. Well-meaning individuals sometimes commented that it might
be better stewardship of money to donate trip funds to qualified
missionaries. I was able to see that short mission trips are often
more of a blessing to the servant than to the served.
"This is one reason that Ive enjoyed volunteering
with the mission groups who come to Project Amistad. It is great
to see the relationships that are formed between people of two
different cultures and all of the surprises that God has for one
short trip. God has amazed me in many ways since Ive become
a mission volunteer with Project Amistad, both personally and
also with the work Ive seen him do in other people."
Marty worked as a substitute teacher for Washington County Schools
and Blue Ridge Job Corps in Virginia from February to June 2001.
