and Beth Rule

Beth and Bill Rule were appointed in January 2003 to serve with
the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (Synod of Livingstonia)
in Malawi. Beth, a registered nurse specializing in public health
and HIV/AIDS, works with the new AIDS drug program for Embangweni
Hospital. Bill works with the Loudoun Presbytery, the three schools
on the station, and the hospital, helping them improve their information
technology capability, accounting practices, and the coordination
of presbytery projects. He served for a period as acting administrator
of the hospital.
In November of 2000, a trip to Malawi made a deep impression
on Beth. She remembers bouncing over rough roads, going from clinic
to clinic with a joyous, singing, laughing group of Malawian nurses
and health workers. The joy with which people worked and lived
left her awe-struck, and she writes, "I marveled at the serenity
with which they accepted death as a part of life. They truly do
see life on earth as only a small part of the journey. Because
of AIDS and other diseases, they are confronted with loss of loved
ones frequently. They grieve and then move on with the certainty
that this separation from their loved one is only temporary."
Bill Rule was born in the village of Lubondai, Congo (then the
Belgian Congo), and spent his childhood among the Luba and Lulua
of the Kasai province. The breadth of traditions, cultures, and
communities that he experienced in his youth served as a coach
in tolerance and communication.
