Mr. Ruun is executive director of the New Sudan Council of Churches. He was elected to the position at the Fifth Annual General Assembly of the New Sudan Council of Churches in March 1995.

Established in 1989, the New Sudan Council of Churches is an ecumenical organization uniting seven denominations in southern Sudan. After being driven out of Torit by a government offensive, the organization moved its headquarters to Nairobi in 1992. The agency's policies are managed by the General Assembly which meets each year and by the Executive Committee. The New Sudan Council of Churches assists its member churches in providing social services, education, relief, and pastoral care to the people and churches of Sudan.

The Executive Committee of the New Sudan Council of Churches continues its involvement in peacemaking activities. The committee's newest initiative is in the area of peace monitoring. Training events have been held to determine how the churches in Sudan can participate in monitoring and maintaining peace once it is found. Plans are underway for church members to receive training in communication skills, survival and first aid, humanitarian principles, and transcultural awareness.

Born in Sudan, Dr. Ruun has served the church in a variety of ways. He was chair of the Sudan Interior Church General Council, in addition to becoming general secretary and the liaison between the Sudanese government and international agencies. He studied Christian communications at Daystar International Institute in Kenya, before graduating from Columbia Bible College in South Carolina with a BA in Bible. He later earned an MA in education and a DMin from Columbia Biblical Seminary. After serving as chaplain-in-residence for South Carolina's Department of Mental Health, he was certified as a pastoral educator at the Academy for Pastoral Education. He and his wife, Mary Akwot Ajak, are the parents of five children.

Birthday: January 1
