Nagoya is a city of over two million people located in the heartland
of Japan, midway between Tokyo to the east and Osaka to the west.
The shinkansen, or bullet train, passes through Nagoya The Nagoya
area is responsible for approximately one percent of the industrial
output of the entire world. The principal industries are aviation,
automobile, machine tools, industrial robotics, fine ceramics,
furniture, and textiles.
Tricia gets the chance to meet and speak with students at the
regular worship services in the chapel at Kinjo Gakuin University,
which is usually attended by freshmen, Christian students, and
Christian staff members. With the three other Christian missionaries
on campus, Tricia leads a Bible study in English. "Students
who are interested in talking about the Bible or who want to practice
their English enjoy this time with the missionaries," she
writes.
Tricia is also active off-campus. She leads an adult Bible study
in English at Nagoya church and helps with a neighborhood outreach
program at Kinjo church by teaching English to kindergarten and
elementary school children. At Meito Christ church, Tricia leads
a womens Bible study attended by Japanese and expatriate
women.
Tricia holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from Emory
University in Atlanta, Georgia, and a masters of education
degree with a specialty in teaching English to speakers of other
languages (ESOL) from Georgia State University, also in Atlanta.
She is a frequent contributor to academic journals in her field.
Prior to taking up her ministry at Kinjo Gakuin University, Tricia
was program director and ESOL teacher in grades K through 12 in
Rockdale County Schools in Conyers, Georgia (1989-1993). She taught
ESOL in middle schools in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Atlanta,
Georgia, from 1986 to 1989, and she taught science in Duluth,
Georgia, and College Park, Georgia, from 1981 to 1987.
Tricia is a member of Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Stone
Mountain, Georgia.
