Tricia Thornton is a long-term volunteer appointed in 1993 and assigned to the Council on Cooperative Mission of the Church of Christ in Japan (Kyodan). She is associate professor of English at Kinjo Gakuin University, a Christian women’s college in Nagoya, Japan.

Kinjo Gakuin University was founded by Presbyterian missionaries in 1889. "Since that time," writes Tricia, "it has continued to grow as a Christian institution that seeks to honor God in a predominately non-Christian culture. As a Christian at the university, I also seek to bring glory to God through my work and relationships with other teachers, staff, students, and the community. My prayer is that through my work, words, and life I reflect the qualities of my Lord so that others may see at least a shadow of God’s goodness."

Nagoya is a city of over two million people located in the heartland of Japan, midway between Tokyo to the east and Osaka to the west. The shinkansen, or bullet train, passes through Nagoya The Nagoya area is responsible for approximately one percent of the industrial output of the entire world. The principal industries are aviation, automobile, machine tools, industrial robotics, fine ceramics, furniture, and textiles.

Tricia gets the chance to meet and speak with students at the regular worship services in the chapel at Kinjo Gakuin University, which is usually attended by freshmen, Christian students, and Christian staff members. With the three other Christian missionaries on campus, Tricia leads a Bible study in English. "Students who are interested in talking about the Bible or who want to practice their English enjoy this time with the missionaries," she writes.

Tricia is also active off-campus. She leads an adult Bible study in English at Nagoya church and helps with a neighborhood outreach program at Kinjo church by teaching English to kindergarten and elementary school children. At Meito Christ church, Tricia leads a women’s Bible study attended by Japanese and expatriate women.

Tricia holds a bachelor of science degree in biology from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and a master’s of education degree with a specialty in teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) from Georgia State University, also in Atlanta. She is a frequent contributor to academic journals in her field.

Prior to taking up her ministry at Kinjo Gakuin University, Tricia was program director and ESOL teacher in grades K through 12 in Rockdale County Schools in Conyers, Georgia (1989-1993). She taught ESOL in middle schools in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Atlanta, Georgia, from 1986 to 1989, and she taught science in Duluth, Georgia, and College Park, Georgia, from 1981 to 1987.

Tricia is a member of Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
