Email: Stan and Mia Topple

Mia and Stan Topple ended their latest term of service as volunteers on March 31, 2008.

Drs. Stan and Mia Topple are medical doctors serving as long-term volunteers in Kenya. They work in partnership with the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. Stan is a surgeon and advisor at the Kikuyu Orthopedic Rehabilitation Centre in Kikuyu, Kenya. Mia has served as a dermatologist at Kikuyu General Hospital. Recent years have found the Topples developing dermatology and orthopaedic services in other mission hospitals as well as Kikuyu.

"A witness to Christ is rendered in word and deed for the deep spiritual and emotional needs of these deprived peoples," Stan says. "The work is broad, networking with many other church and government agencies, embracing many tribes and nations of the East Africa region."

"I have enjoyed worshipping with Christians here in the local church and in the morning chapel, where hospital staff take turns leading the services," writes Mia.

Comparing his current location to previous work sites, Stan observes: "Having served for 22 years under the PCUS board in Korea, this African experience is remarkable for the warmth and informality of the African worship experience. We are also struck by the great surge of volunteer church-groups that enrich the scene. Many short-term volunteers come on their own for two to six weeks as surgeons, medical students, and engineers."
