Stan was a mission worker for the former Presbyterian Church
U.S. from 1959-1981. He was director of the Wilson Leprosy Center
in Soonchun, Korea (1965-1978), chief of orthopedics at the Veterans
Administration Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia (1974-1975), and assistant
professor of orthopedics at Emory University (1974-1975). He was
director emeritus, advisor, and orthopedic surgeon at the Wilson
Leprosy Center (1978-1981) and chief of orthopedics at Charlotte
Rehabilitation Hospital (1981-1985). He was in private practice
as an orthopedic surgeon in Marion, North Carolina, from 1985
to 1990, just prior to returning to mission service.
Mia was appointed in January 1962 by the Mission Board of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.) after she married Stan. She worked
at the Wilson Leprosy Center until June 1981.
Stan holds a bachelors of science degree from Davidson
College. Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, awarded his medical
doctor degree. He is a member of the American Medical Association,
the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, the American Academy
of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the Christian Medical Society.
Mia graduated from the Medical School of Oslo University in Oslo,
Norway. She had two years further training in pediatrics at the
University of Minnesota hospital and Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse,
Wisconsin.
Stan and Mia have four adult daughters. When in the United States,
they attend Montreat Presbyterian Church in Montreat, North Carolina.
Stan is an associate elder in the Presbyterian Church of the Torch
in Kikuyu, Kenya.
