Catherine is an education mission specialist reassigned to serve in Indonesia with Johnnes, a native of Indonesia. Catherine has been in Indonesia since 1989 as a professor of English at Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga, Indonesia. She has been reassigned to Indonesian Christian University at Tomohon (UKIT) as professor of English and English curriculum development. Johnnes also worked with Satya Wacana Christian University with the Institute of Community Service as the executive secretary and head of the Center for Human Resource Development in East Timor working to develop and empower marginalized communities through programs for women, for agricultural training, and for the protection of land, forest, and water resources. As the Tulungens move to Manado, Johnnes has taken a position with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

While at Satya Wacana, Catherine developed the English department and postgraduate program. In her new position with UKIT, she will have the opportunity to develop their English program and curriculum materials. UKIT is opening a language development center and Catherine will provide teaching expertise for the new program.

Catherine's educational background suits her well for her work in Indonesia. She has a BA from Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, and an MA in teaching ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. She is affiliated with both TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and ISIETAR (International Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research).

Johnnes graduated from Sam Ratulangi University in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, with a BA from the Agricultural Faculty. He received an MS in developmental studies from Bogor Agricultural University in Salatiga, Indonesia. He has vast experience in the areas of development and agriculture working primarily with the Institute of Community Service, Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga.

Johnnes and Catherine are the parents of Ian and Paul.
